One Saturday, my sister-in-law and I took her grandchildren (my great-neices? does that seem possible - I’m not that old???) to see Junie B. Jones...which is a fun character from an Arizona author, Barbara Park, book(s). It was a fun Saturday. We headed off in my little PT Cruiser, just the four of us with high expectations! I was excited because it was my first experience with a children’s book author and a book signing. I didn’t know what to expect and wanted to discover how these things worked out. Of course, Barbara Park has written a lot of books and is very experienced at meeting the public, so I would never, ever compare her to myself. I am new and unknown. I just wanted to see how things looked on the other end of the spectrum. So, there we were the four of us walking into a big gymnasium on a hot June day here in Arizona!
The sponsors, Changing Hands bookstore, had a small stage set-up in front and an actress who played the first grader “Junie B” came out to do a skit with her big “Junk of Trunk“, Haili and Brenna (the two little girls with us) were so excited!! It was so much fun.
When it was over we all had to stand in long, long lines to wait our turn to meet first “Junie B” and then have Barbara Park sign our books!! What a thrill. I learned something valuable that day! I learned that you sign the title page of your book...I did not know that. I have been signing the front cover of my book because it has such a nice clean page to write all over and you can use fancy writing on that page...so I have to stick with my title page and write much smaller on green glossy paper...I think? Anyway, it was such fun and we enjoyed our time together. I was able to say to Barbara Park “I so enjoyed reading your stories to my first graders...” but that was all I could get out because she was so busy signing her many books after all we were in group D of 40 people and you could have two books each...lots and lots of books to sign!!!
