2 ¼ cup sifted flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp. Double Action Baking Powder
¾ tsp. Baking soda
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp cloves
¾ tsp. Cinnamon
¼ tsp. Nutmeg
¾ cup Brown Sugar
Sift all of this together. I sift it three times to make sure the raising agents are mixed in well.
1 cup sour milk
*Note:If you do not have sour milk, just add one 2 tbsp of vinegar to a cup of milk.
¾ cup high grade shortening
*Beat this mixture for 2 minutes
3 unbeaten eggs
*Beat for 2 more minutes,
Bake in a pre-heated oven of 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
Into 5 tbsp. Flour gradually blend in 1 cup milk. Cook to a very thick paste (about 5 min.) stirring constantly, cool to lukewarm.
Meanwhile cream ½ cup shortening and ½ cup butter with 1 cup granulated sugar, and ¼ tsp. salt.
Add lukewarm paste.
Beat with beater until fluffy.
Fold in 1 tsp. Vanilla and add chopped walnuts if desired. After using half of the mixture in the middle, add powdered sugar to form a frosting. If it gets too thick, add milk
Sprinkle crushed walnuts on top.
