Drinking Increases Women's Chance of Cancer

By Yana Berlin

Even if it’s mild drinking.

A new study concluded that drinking one glass of wine daily increases women's risks for breast cancer and other varieties of the illness. The study conducted on more than a million women in the UK found that alcohol accounts for 5,000 yearly cases of breast cancer.

Many of us tend to end the day with a soothing glass of wine, but it is a well-known fact that alcohol damages your health, especially since its linked to some cancers.  While some may think this only pertains to heavy drinkers, moderate "wine-sippers" also have an increased risk of cancer.

Researchers have examined women around the age of 55 to see how their alcohol consumption is related to getting cancer. Participants were enlisted when they attended a breast cancer screening and were watched for the next 7-8 years to see if they were diagnosed with any type of cancer.

wine The study found that women who consumed 1 drink a day, rather than 1-2 times a week, had an increased risk of cancer including breast, liver, rectum, mouth, pharynx, esophagus, and larynx. (1 drink= 1 unit is 10 milliliters of alcohol, which is a third of a pint of beer, or half a standard 175 ml glass of red wine.)

Breast cancer diagnosis has increased. In advanced countries such as the UK, the chances of having breast cancer by age 75 are 9.5 in 100. According to the study, for every extra unit of alcohol over 2 daily, the risk increases 1.1 per 100. For example, is you had a 9. chance of getting breast cancer by age 75, but drank one glass of wine daily, the risk would increase to 10.6 . If you drank two glasses, that risk would go up to 11.7 %.

While this small increase in alcohol consumption does not sound extreme, many women are being affected. Researchers have found that alcohol accounts for 11% of breast cancer in the UK.

Did you know that the combination of smoking and drinking increases your chances of being diagnosed with these cancers? Alcohol may disintegrate some toxins in cigarettes, making both drinking and smoking even riskier than doing one of them.

Female Participants Most of the women in this study were mild drinkers. A quarter did not drink any alcohol whatsoever. The average woman had about 1 unit daily.
Side Notes Researchers accounted other components that raise cancer risks such as birth control, HRT, smoking, exercise & weight.

Life presents us with curveballs that we can't always control. However being aware of the chances help us make rational choices. Alcohol has been a known cancer causing substance and it is crucial that you monitor the amount you drink.
