I have a pair of those shoes that have been passed down in my family. Just looking at the shoes makes my feet hurt, and now I understand why. Years ago, I was told that this custom originated as a way of keeping women where they were—they quite literally couldn’t ‘run away from home.’ Or is it truly “Vanity, thy name is woman“—?
