Im Addicted to Chapstick

By Staff Writer

For the last four years, I have had chapstick in my pocket.

Is it possible the more I apply it, the more I need it?

Turns out, that’s exactly what’s happening.  Amy Derick, M.D., a dermatologist in Barrington, Illinois says “you aren’t addicted—you’ve simply grown so accustomed to the way your salve makes your lips feel, you perceive your pout as parched when it’s not coated.” It’s possible that we’ve also grown accustomed to different flavors they come in: “Many balms come in yummy flavors, like vanilla, which causes you to lick your lips,” adds Derick. “As saliva evaporates from your skin, it removes not only the product, but the moisture from your mouth as well.”

In order to try to get rid of this addiction, you should try to apply an emollient taste-free formula onto your lips until your lips feel smooth.  Do not apply it more than three times a day; “that’s all anyone needs to stay
hydrated,” says Derick.

Products to try and break the habit:

Honey Lip Balm

Sea Grass Lip Balm SPF 15
