The Black Eyed Peas have a whole song based on girls getting their looks and assets (ahem ahem) from their mothers, but just how much truth is there to that? Well given half of your genetic material comes from mom, the likelihood is pretty high, but a study recently finished by the Loma Linda University Medical School shows there is a definite correlation between signs of aging between mothers and their daughter(s).
In past studies of aging trends, the findings were based on observational studies, the conclusions of which left science wanting. But Loma Linda's study actually measured volume loss and other signs of aging with data-producing methods. The study found that women often exhibit similar aging trends to their mother's, such as where skin begins to sag and puffy pockets under the eye.
This isn't a definitive sentencing for life though, so don't fret just yet. There are plenty of modern anti-aging creams, serums and cosmetic surgery options available that we're not doomed to completely turn into our mothers as time goes on. The most important and vital thing you can do to keep aging signs at the minimum is to stay out of the sun. Wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen should be go-to items before leaving the house for outdoor adventures, although sunscreen should be used daily. Sunscreen was probably not included in your mother's beauty routine, so you still have a chance to take preventative steps.
Anti-wrinkle and other anti-aging creams are great if you can find one that really does a good job with your skin. Smoking, and a bad diet can also age you prematurely, so do good by your body and it'll return the favor.
1. Use sunscreen religiously.
2. Eat well and don't smoke.
3. Find a great night cream and daily moisturizer to keep your skin in tip top shape.
