Mrs. Baker's Spice Cake

2 ? cup sifted flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp. Double Action Baking Powder
? tsp. Baking soda
? tsp. salt
? tsp cloves
? tsp. Cinnamon
? tsp. Nutmeg
? cup Brown Sugar      

Sift all of this together. I sift it three times to make sure the raising agents are mixed in well.

NOW ADD:

1 cup sour milk

*Note:If you do not have sour milk, just add one 2 tbsp of vinegar to a cup of milk.
? cup high grade shortening

*Beat this mixture for 2 minutes

NOW ADD:

3 unbeaten eggs

*Beat for 2 more minutes,  

Bake in a pre-heated oven of 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.

CREAMY NUT FILLING & FROSTING:

Into 5 tbsp. Flour gradually blend in 1 cup milk. Cook to a very thick paste (about 5 min.) stirring constantly, cool to lukewarm.

Meanwhile cream ? cup shortening and ? cup butter with 1 cup granulated sugar, and  ?  tsp. salt.
Add lukewarm paste.
Beat with beater until fluffy.
Fold in 1 tsp. Vanilla and add chopped walnuts if desired. After using half of the mixture in the middle, add powdered sugar to form a frosting. If it gets too thick, add milk
Sprinkle crushed walnuts on top.
