Sex is important. It’s linked to creativity, drive self-esteem and long-term health. Research shows that couples in long-term relationships who have sex twice a week see it as way of demonstrating their love and commitment and thus it brings them closer together. This could be something to do with the release of the hormone oxytocin. It’s the pair-bonding hormone that is released during orgasm and makes couples feel warmer towards each other. When we‘re having regular sex in a loving relationship, we feel gentler, more accomodating, and more conciliatory towards our partner.
Those who have regular sex within a loving relationship are judged by their peers to look five to 10 years younger then they really are. Levels of the relaxant hormone oxytocin surge to five times their normal level during orgasm. This causes the release of endorphins, which relieve pain. Couples who have sex once or twice a week show 30 per cent higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A, which strengthens your body’s immune system.
Sex is an excellent form of exercise. Energetic love-making can rise the pulse to around 150bpm and an energetic session burns off the same number of calories as 15 minutes on a treadmill.
How can you keep your sex-relation hot?
Make a to-do list - Identify any unresolved tensions in other areas of your relationship - most commonly over unequal allocation of housework or childcare - that are leading to resentment. Then make a to-do list, dividing chores fairly, and stick to it.
Don’t have sex - Sensate focus- where couples concentrate on simply touching each other in a non-sexual way- is a great exercise to raise sexual tension. As is ‘pleasure swapping‘- one night the man does all the work and next time, it’s the woman’s turn. Knowing that all you have to do is relax and enjoy can lead to turnaround in pleasure levels.
Keep your distance - ‘Familiarity really can breed contempt‘. When couples do everything together and are always in each other’s company, they lose that sexual sparkle and become more like brother and sister. Having your own interests and ‘space’ could paradoxically, keep you closer. Introduce an element of surprise - Shaking things up and doing it a little differently every now and then is a great way to keep you interested. Swap your pillows to the foot of the bed for a whole new perspective.
Ask your lover for a hug - Research suggests that daily hugs dramatically lower blood pressure and boost levels of oxytocin to make you naturally feel good.

This is a terrific article! I agree with every statement made by the author and congratulate her for saying it so well! Perhaps we should all have bumper stickers created with the slogan: “Did You Ask Your Lover for a Hug today?” - just for a quick daily reminder.
