Women Create!

By Carine Nadel

Women Create! A Seriously Whimsical Celebration of the Creative Feminine by Hilda Ruch is billed as a "seriously whimsical celebration of the creative feminine".  It is an easy reading book with lots of anecdotal by real women.

The anecdotal seem to come from all walks of life, all ages and then examines how each woman uses their creative gifts.  Each chapter begins with quotes from well known names and proceeds on with a story about a courageous woman from the past.  Then the chapter moves on to talk about a fictional woman and her mark on female society, the first chapter uses Holly-Go-Lightly.  These are all billed as "Never born, yet she will always live".

Each chapter has a section of "interview with a wild woman"-those women who did something extraordinary with the obvious-such as become a famous sculptress by using only things she found-heaven knows where.  The author considers herself a wild woman.

Ruch explains the wild women segments differently and feels these interviews are integral to the book. "We love to achieve and enjoy a challenge.   Wild women nurture relationships, seek adventure and understand that oopses and mistakes are a part of the process.  Take for example:  Abigail Adams, Rosa Parks, Nancy Drew and Hillary Clinton-all wild women in their own right!"

The author has a doctorate in education and teaches Creative Process at the University of Texas at Dallas.

I enjoyed reading about how women create and change lives-even those who are essentially fiction.  I love reading and found that characters such as Nancy Drew would unleash my normally very logical and straightforward thoughts and make me want to be a detective.

Simply, the book makes you think-are you of your own mind or do you follow what is to be considered human nature?

Women Create! helps us to want to pursue the opportunities that we might otherwise claim foolish and put aside.
