Green Thumb?

I see these window boxes at the local garden center and I think, “Oh, they would look so pretty hanging under the front windows“. So I tell my husband to load em’ up.

I ask one of the nice ladies at the center to help me pick out some flowers for my new boxes, since my green thumb is actually brown.

We pile up the cart and $200 later I’m excited about getting my new window boxes in place and show off my beautiful flowers.

My hubby hangs the boxes and I carefully put in the recommended soil and the beautiful new flowers. Oh, how pretty.

A week later…oh, how ugly. My flowers are dying. I’m feeling a little frustrated but still determined to enjoy my window boxes. I go get more flowers and put them in; they die. I get more flowers…well, you can see where this is going.

So, it’s Spring again and I’m recharged and ready to take on the window box challenge. I’m half way there…one plant is hanging in there (barely) and the other…well not so good.

Who can save me from this window box struggle? At this point I’m ready to put fake flowers in. My husband has kind of discouraged me from doing that, which is probably a good thing.

Any suggestions?

I don’t know if I’ll be of much help or not, but here are a few suggestions. Are you choosing the correct flowers for the location… sun or shade? Are you using the correct potting soil? Is there good drainage in the window boxes? Fertilizing also helps a lot. And over-watering can be just as bad as not watering enough. Another thing to check is to make sure there aren’t any bugs, mites, etc.

Wishing you good luck and a green thumb!
