Denim gets a good 'ole update (by update we really mean throwback)

Katie Holmes sauntered down the streets of New York yesterday with a few hundred of her favorite paps in tow.

And as if the cute haircut, polka dot scarf and adorable cardigan weren’t enough to goggle at, her jeans have the LA Times buzzing.

In an article that appeared over the weekend, Times reporter Emily Visilind reported on Peg-and-Roll pants, specifically citing Holmes’ appearance in them as a harbinger of another ‘80’s flashback trend.

For some reason, I can’t really remember this look, but according to the fashion press it was hot in the ‘80’s.  The 501’s yes, the low waisted part – not so much – and it certainly never looked quite this good.  This look really reminds me of the ‘50’s more than anything…but anyway, I digress.

Visilind wrote in her article:   "That's right: The puffy, peg-leg '80s profile we never thought would come back is with us again - and we're not even snickering. Girls in East Side bars, fashion publicists in Beverly Hills and style leaders such as Holmes are doing the peg-and-roll, creating a silhouette that's relaxed at the top, slouchy even, with an above-the ankle crop that shows off a killer pair of shoes.

It feels right partly because denim has been decidedly buttoned-up recently, with hard-to-wear skinny jeans or flat-front, trouser styles. The peg-and-roll is all about ease. It doesn’t hug the form—it grazes it. Which doesn’t mean it’s easy to pull off.”

Vesilind goes on to give step by step instructions on how to roll these babies up perfectly.

Now, I have the image of thousands of pairs of “mom pants” misguidedly coming out of storage in unison with the unleashing of this trend – you know the ones with the “front butt” that Saturday Night Live spoofed.  Before you go there, be sure to note the front butt cutting waistline and Holmes’ decided lack of pooch.  This is key in making this trend work.

To get this look, Levi’s 501’s work just great.  Also Current/Elliott (shown in the lower image here).
