(Kaiser Wilderness in the Sierra Nevada mountains)

Dot com, dot net and everything in between.

Often I feel very distant from most women my age. I am now considered middle-aged, but most mistake me for much younger. Never have I revolved my life around a man, nor children. I’ve avoided marriage, giving birth and living with a boyfriend. Why, because I was busy with college and my true passions: computers, photography and the outdoors.

Over a decade ago I left my 3D animation career to focus on my little web site. I had years worth of photos and travel stories published on the web and I was determined to make a career out of this work-from-home internet fad. Now here I am 14 years later and I am here to share my dreams and stories with you. Online & off.

My design and computer skills I honed in college, but my web skills are all self taught via the internet, free of charge. Averaging over a 40 hour work week is not uncommon, as I stay up late into the night compiling article and data, but  I get to travel and vacation over 40 days per year.

This dreamy web site, Total Escape focuses on getting you away from the computer, deep into the California outdoors and it gets more web traffic than this Fab40 site. Women who travel are 56% of my visitors, but men buy 90% the maps I sell. The majority are local Californians, and many are child-free, like me. My main revenue comes from advertisers and reservations, not memberships or sponsorships.

Luckily this summer my traffic has really increased, mainly because of my recent database rebuild, search engine optimization and maybe the fact that everyone is searching for bargain travel with this poor economy. People need to travel - local, often and on a budget, which is what my site specializes in.

Now I have finally taken a huge step in my promotions department by purchasing my own vinyl cutting machine, so I can produce my own bumper stickers. I’ve already mailed out 50 of them this summer and plan on creating many more colors.

If you love nature and the great outdoors and live in California, please visit my site and let me know what you think. I am a solo operation here, celebrating 14 years online. Daily I handle all the design, writing, photography, web code, blogging, SEO, marketing, sales, and the shipping of waterproof topographic maps.

    • Congratulations! A career that you love, that’s your passion, and that provides income - and 14 years, too.

Thank you for such an inspiring blog.

    • Awesome you found a career you love.

I hope you can hang on to it for a long time. My plans had to change and I love my now career. Mom, wife, photography, jewelry making, web design, photo editing, and the list goes on.

It is so crucial you love what you do. Personally I love being online and connecting with others. Fab40 is one of my favorite places. Not sure about traffic here, but I know it is quite high.

Sadly, unless you are premium we cannot see your site links.

      Keep on keeping on!! heart

    • Yes, I realized after the fact that no one except “premium members” can post real, informative blogs with photos & links. Maybe my outdoors site should go ‘membership’ based after 14 years?? ... but I probably wouldn’t have 12,000 people per day looking at it tongue out

You guys can easily find my web site by typing ‘Total Escape’ into search engines, or I come up on the top pages for searches like: California Lakes, California Cabins, California Camping, California Hot Springs.
