I could not belive this when I read it . What’s next ? If recycling and reuse is so important they sure are going to make it hard on alot of people to do that . This is going to effect alot of people that have small stores . The is going on in the government ? What do you all think ?

A BAN ON HANDMADE CLOTHING????
As of February 10, a new law will ban the resale of used clothing or toys for children aged 12 and under unless it is tested for content of lead and phthalates (phthalates are chemicals used to make plastics more pliable).

Um, whaaat????

Okay, I’m sure whoever wrote this ridiculous law (and the idiots that passed it) were filled with good intentions.
But at what cost?

In addition to thousands of thrift stores not knowing what to do with donations, this law would also impact small businesses who cannot afford the thousands of dollars required for testing, as well as crafty moms who make extra cash selling handmade clothing and toys on Etsy or eBay.

In dire economic times, what families need is an opportunity to save money on necessities like clothing, and to be able to purchase them on ebay, or Goodwill, or garage sales.

Too, the last thing our landfills need is a huge quantity of toys and clothing.
What about people who love and collect vintage items?
And isn’t the source for most of the lead stuff from China anyway? How about fining the source instead?

Must the government moderate our every move?
If you feel you must, print a big frickin’ label on something with a warning it might contain lead for goodness sake.
Funny how the generation before us seemed to survive perfectly well, thank you very much, with lead in everything from their dishes to the paint on their walls.
I am so tired of being ‘protected’ from everything.

read more here

It looks like some voices are being heard, and eBay may still be acceptable at this point
see exemptions that are being considered, here, and here.

Please write and call your local representatives and complain about this stupidity.

    • There is also legislation in the works that could affect those who make soaps and other crafts, I think it involves having to join an organization, which costs $$$$$$-again, a burden on entrepreneurs and moms trying to make some income.

    • I don’t think they have good intentions at all. Small biz America has deemed Feb 10th as National Bankruptcy Day - really! This is an economic stimulus package for big business - espeically imported business!
What is it going to have to come to before we stage a massive boycott? The only thing politicians listen to is money. :(

    • LOL dahne!!

I have to agree with Howard, the trickle down effect seems to be happening much quicker these days. I am appalled because I have been looking into ways to make a few extra dollars and I swear I was thinking about starting to make my own clothes. I was on wikiHowTo earlier today to see if  there was anything I could make inexpensively myself and sell at like Yard Sales or Craft shows. Guess those are going to be banned/monitored soon too! I have also been warning my 16yr old daughter of what will and will not be available to her. I keep telling her that I want to buy a house, a _REAL_   house that she and her little brother can live in, because when the time comes for her to be on her own, she'll have a very hard time getting one. Without her degree, or even with her degree life will be very very hard.

HappyMomm... I may be in line for that Bankruptcy, No Joke!

And a note to all of you who feel “overwhelmed” by the religious tones in a lot of the postings here.. sorry.
But The Government is doing exactly what is foretold in the Bible. I’d say within 6mos to a year of Obama taking office we will be using a one world currency, “in GOD we trust” will no longer be on currency and we will have a one world religion. We will soon enough, no longer have our Freedom of Speech and we will be scanned where ever we go.

Sorry Daphne don’t mean to bring everyone down.

    • Um, you do know they have moved the In God We Trust off the face of the new coins, right? It is on the side, and is basically illegible.
I work with a company that just released a new plan and they are calling it the Economic Stimulus Package - and unlike the govt, they aren’t giving you back your own money. LOL The plan is AWESOME, and I can see it helping alot of people who are in a quandry right now. They have lowered the start up costs, and increased the bonuses so that you can establish a good solid ongoing income in as little as a month! I am SO excited.
I am going to let Hannah keep churning along with her soaps because ironically I don't think soaps were included in the first round of eliminations. I agree with Howard though - if we all band together I think the govt would cower. Sadly, complacency is what 80 percent of the population will respond with, even if it is they who are being affected!
I see prophecy being fulfilled too. When we were in Cancun we learned that the Mayan calendar is the most accurate ever created (besides the NASA one) The Mayan calendar ends in 2012 - the NASA calendar ‘starts over’ in 2017. That has been bouncing around in my head since I heard it!

    • Dee Dee, I’ve been off since last night early.
I have seen that Mayan airing on History channel several times, matter of fact it came on again at 12midnight last night. I can’t help but ponder over it obsessively. The date is December 21, 2012, I’ve also heard that the Binary calendar in a computer also stops in 2012. Didn’t know about the NASA thing either.

Um about the currency... no I didn’t know. Does it have Obamas’ image on it?

I have a really hard time watching the news, I’m the type of person who will sit there and cry over all the tragedy or call these people on TV idiots for not realizing what they are doing. But of course what is GOD’s Will, will happen and there’s not a blessed thing I can do about it, except pray!

    • Lu,
Good news for yard sales and thrift stores. Not so good news for anyone else:
"However, people who make children's toys or clothing - even if it's a small operation in their basement - will be required to prove to the government that their products do not contain lead before they can sell them

The law goes into effect in February.”
was at the end of that article. That may provide a loop hole for people to sell their homemade products as ‘used’ but it is a loop hole people shouldn’t have to jump through. I’ll probably have to label my soap (and you your candles) “not sold to be used by children”
It is assinine, but then so is the government!

    • Well, fortunately for us (our organization) we don’t sell anything used, we give it away! We may be returning to a bartering society.
