Almost 2 years ago, I was looking for a new counselor for my teenage son since the one we were seeing was not working out.  There was one lady we interviewed who was great; very intuitive, had a suspicion on a different approach I should be taking, etc.  We ended up taking that approach rather than seeing her again, since it made sense to do so.

The thing that grabbed me during that talk, however, was how she dealt with me.  She treated me like an intelligent adult, and like I understood what she was talking about (which I did), and like I knew my son better than most people.  In other words, she believed and respected me.  Strange as that might sound, that blew me away!  With very few exceptions, I don't think I'd ever been treated like that!

This started the ball rolling for me toward re-examining my relationships with certain family members and then toward looking, really looking at myself:  my fears, my triggers, how I act/react toward others.  Not all of it is bad (I really am a good person, how about that?), and some of it is surprising.  Much is still waiting to be discovered and articulated.  All is good toward becoming a strong, healthy individual.
