On Saturday, as I stood on the balcony of the lovely condo at Star Island, I experienced overwhelming stress. The kind that brings tears to the eyes (thus the forum post - “When All Else Fails!“). It was quiet - friend was at his conference & the grounds of the resort seemed almost deserted. I felt an urge to turn on the CD player & hear the strains of Russell’s awesome voice. As the music began to soar, I felt a soaring in my spirit and the words “Success is a choice” rolled across my mind. Where stress & dejection had formerly resided; power & positivity took over. I felt the energy rise and was determined to succeed at the purpose PAPA had given me!

It’s true! Success IS a choice! We can decide to make things work to the benefit of all or we can decide to fail at any endeavor. There are of course, factors that affect what we do. . . but we can let DAD work and work our way out, over, around and through those things that would take us down the path of destruction.

In John Maxwell’s “Roadmap to Success“, he starts by asking us to determine what “success” means to us & then write it down. The word will mean different things to each of us. It might mean all things financial. Or it could mean notoriety (“fame“), or simply that awesome feeling of accomplishment that comes from a job well done. Whatever the word means to us. . . it’s first & foremost important to define it for ourselves.

But even before that - we must determine if the ‘price’ of success is worth the effort it will take. Do we have the “stick-to-it” that it will take? Can we determine with our ‘will’ to be successful with the purpose we’ve been given?

A little transparency from yours-truly! Being of a melancholic temperment, I’m prone to believe that ‘success’ will always allude me. It comes with the ‘melancholic’ territory! I fight it tooth n’ toenail. The “fight” on the balcony was just one of many I’ve battled in my adult life. But something happened in those moments of quiet desperation as I ‘fought’ the feeling of “oh what’s the use“. PAPA was speaking in my heart through the music and the words that rose up in my mind. And it wasn’t just for “me” He was speaking. This post comes from that moment in which I realized that I could choose “success” and pursue the path that would take me/us there. Or I could choose the ‘pity-path’ and walk out before the job was done.

How often have we failed to pursue what we’ve been given to do when the winds blow a little harder than we like? I think if we are totally honest with ourselves. . . we’ll recognize more often than we care to admit.

When we are pursuing what is our ultimate purpose for living, breathing n’ taking sustenance. . . we will walk into storms. Folks who don’t have our best interests at heart - folks who love to take others ‘down’ - situations that roll out of our control. All these, and more, will come our way. If we haven’t determined or decided to SUCCEED - those folks or situations will lead us down the wrong path. I call it “getting caught in the brambles“. Often we’ll have to put ‘blinders’ on and fail to see what is beckoning from the sidelines as we walk toward the success we‘re bound to achieve.

I could go on and on as I think about the balcony experience, but the simple kernel of truth is that once we make a conscious decision (“choice“) to pursue SUCCESS and to SUCCEED in it’s pursuit. . .. half the battle is won.

It may take getting ‘tougher’ on matters related to our purpose. It may mean being less “soft” as we walk forward. Whatever it means to you and your definition of personal/professional success. . . DO IT!

And don’t let a moment’s delay intervene! It doesn’t matter how you make the CHOICE - by word, deed or simply to write “SUCCESS” on slips of papers to post about the house, car - wherever you will see them on a moment to moment basis - the IMPORTANT thing is to. . . . DO IT!

Determine today what SUCCESS means to you. Then CHOOSE to make it your own.

Much love & SUCCESS,

Linda, a fellow journeyer
