“Some of you have already put 2 and 2 together.  This trip is really unpleasant for me, but I’m here to let you know that we have decided to kill off the product and close this site“.  Two sentences, less than a minute, my whole world turned upside down along with the worlds of about 50 other people.  My colleagues. Or more precisely, my former colleagues.

After the announcement, I went back to my desk, and set at my computer.  All the documents and the code I was working on before the meeting were still open.  Work waiting to be continued.  I closed them one by one.  We had so many plans for this product, so many new and exciting features we were working on. And now all those plans were gone. Problems will forever be left unsolved and documents unfinished.

For the rest of the day we walked around in a haze, telling black humor jokes and exchanging personal email addresses.  Time and again I found myself lending a listening ear to people, some of whom I didn’t speak much to for the two years we worked together. Every person had a story.  One guy’s wife is expecting a baby in the next few weeks, another said he won’t be able to afford his therapist anymore, a third is worried that the set of skills he acquired is very specific to our product and he doesn’t have any competitive edge over other people looking for a job.  I gave advice when asked and tried to encourage as much as possible, all the while thinking about the house we are building, about my girls having to give up after school classes, and about the nanny we will have to let go.

Tomorrow I’m going to meet with a few friends (now they are just friends, not colleagues anymore), do some practice interviews together and work on our resumes.  On Thursday, we’ll come to the office once again to have our 1-on-1 with management and HR, and then it will be time to say good bye as we leave for the last time.

    • So Merlot, I have not been following.  Can you tell me more?  What is closing down, your business and what kind?  May I hear from you more?

I do hope you and your colleagues will be able to find something.

      Best to you

    • So sad....economy is looking gloomy all over the world. My husband just got back from Europe, companies are shutting down projects left and right. People are getting laid off and morale is really low every where you look.

We all need to stick together, stay positive and think of new innovative ways to survive during the hard times.

One thing to always remember, that while business are closing down, and people are losing their jobs, there are other businesses that are sprouting, and those that are staying focused and determined will succeed.

I guess it’s time to get that DVD out..

    • Chinadoll,  I’m a software engineer, and I worked for the Israeli R&D center of an American company.  They decided that the overhead of keeping a remote branch was too high and so they decided to close us down.

chocolatier,  thanks.  For now the plan is to stay in Israel and try to find a job here.  If the job market in Israel doesn’t improve and things improve in the US we may consider moving back, but it’s too early to even think about it.

Thanks Yana, you are absolutely right.  I already heard of several companies that are hiring. I know I need to think positive.  I’ll start tomorrow happy...

    • Merlot, I am so sorry to here this. It seems everyday I am hearing about someone loosing their job.

These are definitely rough and scary times.
My husband and I were talking again just yesterday about how nothing is guaranteed.
He works for a major oil corporation and has been there for over ten years but he never knows what they are going to do next.
We just bought a home last year, a duplex, that we have rented out but if something happens to our tenants jobs I don’t know what we are going to do.

We all just have to try and keep positive, creative, and try to help each other out the best way we know how.

Merlot and others who have lost your jobs, know that this will pass, things will get better and know that you are not alone.

I work in IT also... it seems its the nature of the beast lately... I’m out of work too...I hope and know things will get better for you ... for everyone

    • Thank you all so much for your encouragement, support and advice!  The last few days have been a whirlwind of activities and emotions.  Our HR people gave out our phone numbers to all the recruiting companies we used to work with so my phone doesn’t stop ringing.  Unfortunately many of the recruiters told me that right now they don’t have anything for me.

linda08, you mentioned how your brain told you you had things to do. The exact same thing is happening to me.  All of a sudden I notice that I’m trying to work out a problem I had or that I’m thinking about the next item on my todo list.

On Wednesday I went to the office as did many of my others.  People were so supportive of each other, exchanging tips and trying to help each other in every possible way. I’m really going to miss them all.

Good luck to those of you looking for a job.  I hope that from now on we’ll hear only good news on this front!
