Hello to the Fab 40 Community! Amazing how you all have managed to build such a nice, functioning community. Thank the Powers that Be you didn’t have to answer to the United States Congress.
I just heard a journalist commenting on the US Senate Republicans now demanding a filibuster rather than negotiating with Democrats now that the House Bill, which took three proposals with a Constitutional Ammendment attached just today to get through the House, has been defeated in the Senate. “I’m beginning to feel the anger and frustration,” she said. I suppose that means even the media, which usually thrives on such shananigans, is beginning to lose the ability to remain ‘cool‘.

I’ve been waiting to write a column like everyone else, including me, is waiting to learn where we are going as a nation. It’s not looking too promising late this Friday night. We’ve definitely moved beyond ‘broken‘. This government is downright dysfunctional, in my opinion.

Regardless how the dust settles next Tuesday, our Nation, our integrity, our courage to act, our Democracy, itself, has been tarnished in the eyes of the world. Regardless who wins the present war on Capitol Hill, we are all losers. Again, in my opinion.

I will plan on expounding further later next week one way or the other. In the meantime, I hope everyone has a decent weekend. No telling what the next one will bring.

    • I tend to agree with you Tuliplady! I’m sure there will be something comparable if we default and people don’t get their Social Security checks. Not to mention all those who still have no job and need unemployment or help with groceries. Plus, thousands more will be laid off as programs get nixed. Look at the FAA. 4000 laid off already. No controllers, no air traffic. It’s going to be interesting if nothing else.

First off Apple the computer company is worth more than you as a country - what does that say and can I add they made and trade in the Hong Kong dollar the universal trade currency as everything is made in China.

I don’t now how you’ll solve this problem other than you all take to the streets and demand those in charge if they work for the people and the good of the nation and have taken this role for pure interest of the well being of the nation should not take a pay cheque or day off and bust a gut to sort it and secondly stop fighting other folk and meddling in overseas policies of other countries  - why are you fighting in Iraq which is costing billions and billions in $$ and lives when you have people homeless and no social security money in the pot.....

      Obviously just an observation !

So who pays the Presidents wage - you do with your taxes maybe you should just remind him you want some good old “bang for your buck” on your taxes

Your observation is most accurate. The people in this country don’t have the tenacity in the numbers required to hit the streets and stick it out. We could shut the country down just by the truckers parking their rigs where ever they happen to be at a specified given moment. The ones that are still lucky enough to have a job, can’t afford to lose it by protesting. And, they would lose it. We have reverted back to slavery with the dividing lines not being racial as much as class. Why you hear the term class warfare so often.

The country is all about money and power now. It’s no one man, no one president, nor a specific congress (although this one is probably the worst ever). It’s been building for forty years as wealth and greed slowly take over. Now, the banks and the stock market runs this country. Taxes haven’t been as low as they are now for 60 years! Yet billion dollars of profit aren’t even taxed. Yet, they continue to spend spend spend with a large portion going to war. They just borrow it. What’s going to default isn’t new spending, it’s spending already appropriated by CONGRESS!
People yap about “entitlements” and that system, too, is so corrupt due to Big Pharma and Insurance Companies. I suggest everyone look up the definition of “entitlement“. As Msj just posted, “my Phil needs the VA Hospital“. He IS entitled.
When push comes to shove over here, everyone has needs. Even the rightest of the Right will scream loudly if it’s THEIR Social Security or their pension that that gets cut. Some of these radical Right folks don’t even realize that Social Security IS a Government-ran program started by a Democratic President, FDR.
Sure it's gotten out of hand. But it has also been robbed and borrowed from countless times to pay for a damn war! Now, they don't even bother to pay for a war. We invaded both Iraq and Afghanistan without any plan to pay for it! Obama did NOT do that. He was one of the few Senators that voted against Iraq. That was a personal vendetta. Bin Ladin, and it has now been proven, was in Afghanistan all along. What the ** were we doing in Iraq? Or, Iran for that matter. Securing our oil investments, that's what! Afghanistan has no oil. The drug cartels support them! Our boys die for them. I get furious!

In addition, the United States still manufactures more than anyone of ONE thing. That would be weapons! We sell billions of dollars worth of weapons to the same oil barons that turn around and shoot our kids with. Yet, we are all over the freakin’ Globe telling others what to do and how to live. The good anthropology we do, the aid to the world’s poor, most of that comes from the everyday Joe Blow on the street. Millions were donated by the people for Haiti. I often wonder how many know that they’ve never received most of it. Somehow, it got held up in Washington and logistics. The entire Planet is on the edge. Maybe those predictions about 2012 are more accurate than we want to believe.

Sorry, but I get livid! I’ve yet to get over Viet Nam! Do you know how many of the ‘un-entitled’ homeless are Viet Nam vets? Many of them decorated! Yes, I’m a centrist. Also, a common sense conservative. But if what is going on here is Conservative I am a damn flaming liberal. I most assuredly do not hang my head in shame over it. either. I bet Ronald Reagan is turning over in his grave!

    • Annie - If they only started with your list, things would change. Excellent!

Did you notice in the course of this mess, not once was Congressional pay and health care on the table when what could be ‘cut’ was discussed. It’s ok to defund the FAA and put another 4000 on the street, but none of them offer to give up a dime.

I agree with you, too, about campaigning. If they want to campaign while in office, at the least, their pay and benefits should be suspended for the period. I said that back in 2008!

I did hear today that nearly 70% of those polled said the entire spectacle was childish. None of them won any favors with thinking people, I don’t think. Problem is we too soon forget. Oh, I’m not up to marching in the streets anymore, but I would sure be willing to do a boycott of some things. It doesn’t help anyway unless the numbers are in the millions all over the country. And then, yes, violence is risked. Maybe there are no answers because these people don’t know how to look beyond themselves, I don’t think.

Hope all is well with you.
      Best,
      Susan

    • Annie’s right, the solution is...

      *TERM LIMITS*.

Congress, and the President for that matter, are constantly campaigning rather than governing.  They are hearing what their outspoken constituents are saying, and behaving as such in response, hoping it will get them re-elected.

Frankly, we, the voters, need to shoulder a great deal of the blame for the mess we are in.  We sent those guys to DC, ya know.

@Vicky/UK Girl, we actually do have a lot of free health care in the US.  It’s one of the many reasons illegals cross the border to come here.  Just ask California about that and what it costs their state.

    • Good to see you again, Tamra.

Yes, Annie and I both have been saying Term Limits for a long time. This is the classic example of the tail wagging the dog in our government. In order to get term limits, or fairness in Congressional pay, insurance, campaigning . . . you name it, Congress has to pass the law! Are any of us naive enough yet to think Congress will EVER pass a law that hurts Congress? The president was only one person, so they limited that term without much problem after Roosevelt won 4 terms. Congress, on the other hand, is what? 435? It changes all the time when they do their gerrymandering. That’s a lot that aren’t about to cut their own throat. They have no problem, however, cutting yours or mine.

Someone mentioned drugs. Why do all of you think we are hanging on in Afghanistan? Poppies are as valuable as oil. And there again, many citizens have to help shoulder the blame because they create the market. Are drug cartels going to be able to sell their product if there are no buyers? They‘re nothing but a more vicious organized Mafia. Only now, it’s drugs instead of alcohol. We NEVER learn. Morality cannot be legislated. Now, one of the most serious of the drug problems are prescribed meds. So we will just continue to fill up the prisons with a bunch of pot heads where they can learn to become REAL killers, rapists and child molesters. That the inmates rule the prisons is widely known, but denied. A writer friend of mine who happens to also be a firefighter IS a firefighter because ten years in law enforcement at a Maximum Security prison in California was destroying him. He’s just written an expose’ that will turn your hair white! If it isn’t already. :) Yet still, he wanted to ‘serve‘, so now he’s a firefighter.
