I have a bad habit!  I rarely check my Visa bill statement...i just pay it!

Well, this morning i checked it and learned that my credit card is attached to several online accounts and other recurring payment accounts...no wonder i always have a damned Visa bill!  I decided it was time to reduce the number of hands in my credit card account.

I began online...have you ever tried to CANCEL an account online?  Layer after layer of links to click on in order to get to the right page...back-tracking, reading fine print, interpreting legal-ese.  They sure don’t make it easy to get rid of them.  These sites are like labyrinths!  Too bad for them that i’m tenacious when presented with a challenge!

When i was unable to cancel a subscription online i began making some phone calls.  It’s so cool that the contact information is right there on my CC statement!  Dealing with the pre-recorded customer service is annoying, waiting on hold while being forced to listen to very bad music is annoying, having to endure the script that each customer service rep must follow in an effort to keep me as a customer is also annoying.  What is NOT annoying is eliminating a charge to my credit card.

My interest in what’s going on with my credit card has to be a sign that i truly believe that all things financial are going to get worse before they get better.  For too long, i have taken financial security for granted.  Don’t get me wrong, my husband and I have had our financial difficulties during our marriage but i always viewed them as temporary.  As i’m “growing up” and as retirement is creeping up on me, i’m realizing that my money-making years aren’t infinite.  There will come a time when i will have to budget my life in very finite terms.

My father used to tease that his definition of success was: “My money and my life run out on the same day.”

    • That sounds just about right what your father said.  I can’t save money to save life.

My recent motto was “make more money or desire less stuff” I got from some unknown person. The bad thing is I never desire a lot and I already have no money. go figure

    • Anytime you try and take your money away from a company it is hard. But then remember how easy it was for them to initially get it. One possibly two clicks of the mouse and it was theirs.

    • Daphne, I have the same issue. I confessed that in our staff meeting and our bookkeeper was aghast! “How do you know you‘re not being ripped off?”

Well, I actually do scan the charges, but I don’t compare with receipts. She was horrified! Hahaha! And I’m running the organization!?!ohhhh (I do not do the bookkeeping, though!)

Oh, I wanted to add something. You’ve mentioned your Dad’s sayings. I think you should write a little book on them and how you are learning to apply them to your life! I would read that!

    • This is a great reminder for us. I lived (until recently) in the very fast lane rarely slowing down to think let alone check my statements that closely.

Hmmmmmm........ what could I have missed?

    • Cindy...Dad had a million of ‘em!  I’m sure they‘re not all originals but so many people have stories about my father and his sayings...at the golf course, they call them “Donnie-isms“.  My dad’s given name was Donald.

I’ve often thought of doing just that, BTW, Cindy.

    • BB...in this day of electronic bank transfers and electronic withdrawals, gone are the days of writing a check on Monday and covering it on Tuesday!

I, too, have been guilty of leaning heavily on the number of checks i had versus the amount of money i had to back them up!  LOL
