MARY‘S TAKE:

OKAY, you call someone...they answer the phone, they sound rushed and tell you in an annoyed tone, "Hmmmmpff, I don't have time to talk right now...I'm in the middle of something."

WELL, EXCUUUUSE MEEEE.....I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT I WAS CALLING AT SUCH AN INCONVENIENT TIME!

Helpful Heloise Hint from Mary:

DON'T ANSWER THE FRIGGIN PHONE IF YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO TALK!  And, don't act all important and soooooooo much busier than the rest of us because YOU don't have time to talk.  I sit there on the other end, suddenly feeling very trivial and begin to worry and wonder why I have so much time on my hands to even have a conversation.

woman phone

You go out for a meal with someone who leaves their phone on vibrate (or even worse, a LOUD RING) and answers every call they get, telling those people that they are in the middle of something and don't have time to talk.  It's a DOUBLE WHAMMY.

WELL, EXCUUUSSE MEEEE......I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT YOU NEEDED TO KEEP ALL YOUR OPTIONS OPEN AND MAKE SURE YOU DON'T MISS ANYTHING WHILE YOU'RE SPENDING SOME TIME WITH ME!

Now that I think of it, I have yet to have a friend take a call that was an actual 911 Emergency where she had to then rush out of the restaurant, leaving me with the bill, because some family member or son or daughter was actually in a real life emergency and on their way to a hospital.

So, here's my plea to people like this:

1. If you're busy, DON'T TAKE THE CALL.  This is why you pay $5.95/month to your money-grabbing cell phone company—the installed answering machine in your cell phone.

2. If you're with me, DON'T TAKE THE CALL.  Even in extreme emergencies, at the end of the day, life goes on, with or without you and, even harder to believe, with or without me.

Mary

LORRAINE‘S DOUBLE TAKE:

Mary,

I can't agree more about the wired being a really rude bunch of button pushers.  Whether it is screaming into the phone and broadcasting your personal business from here to Kakistan or leaving the ring tone on the highest volume available while entering the confessional at church, people need to brush up on their telephone etiquette.  Our symptoms of cell phone-it-is are showing up everywhere and the need for an immediate session with Ms. Manners should be a mandate for everyone with a cell phone account.

Maybe we need the cell phone rules and regs posted all over the place...however, reality dictates that people will just ignore them anyway.
They want what they want when they want it........and don't dare indict their personal cell phone use.

Now that the airlines are batting around the possibility of cell phone use on planes, there is only one word that would cover most of our opinions regarding a 3 hour yap-a-thon and being in CELL HELL and 12,000 feet............................DON'T!!

Lorraine

    • Mary,

I totally agree with you. I cant stand going out with people who are constantly yapping away on the phone. It will be okay if you dont answer that call this time (knowing its a girlfriend of yours calling just to say “hi“).

How about that friend that says she busy, “Ill call you back,” and then calls back a few minutes later, and says, “I cant walk ill call you later,” or “Oh, I have another line, hold on.”

I will not “Hold on” any longer. I have a life too you know!

Lorraine I had no idea they are thinking about letting people talk on the plane! Our poor ears...

    • Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for the comment and more important, agreeing with us!  I had forgotten about the “hold” feature.  This is also equally offensive and annoying.

How did cell phones become the new symbol for self-importance?

We‘re really not AlL THAT because people are calling us in the middle of a meeting or a conversation.

Social graces, in many ways, have become a thing of the past...I think we would all do well to return to them and bring the word “considerate” back into our social awareness.
