You know, when I was much younger, I used to wonder why older people always seemed to be so cranky. Now I think I’ve figured it out. It’s because they had to put up with ignorance, stupidity and total disrespect! Who wouldn’t be ill if they had to deal with the foolish behavior of some people?

As a baby boomer, I have become much more aware of my surroundings. The same things that irked my parents and grandparents are now starting to get on my nerves.Last week it was customer service---this week it’s something called common courtesy.

My family went to the Arundel Mall in Baltimore over the weekend following my speaking engagement and I came across some pretty rude people there.Whatever happened to saying “excuse me” when you bump into somebody?Whatever happened to offering to open the door for someone walking directly behind you?So what if you don’t know them. That’s just common courtesy.Whatever happened to chastising your child for tearing down a display and then walking away from it as if you don’t know who did it?

I made a comment to a sales clerk about the rudeness of a woman in front of me who snatched the bag out of the clerk’s hand after telling her to “get a life.”I don’t know what the conversation was about but that certainly didn’t seem like an appropriate response from a customer. But what was even more surprising was the reaction from the clerk. She said, “I’m used to this kind of thing.”Then she asked me where I was from.I told her, “North Carolina (by way of Ohio). Then she said, “Well, I guess southerners are just more polite.”WHAT?!I guess I just must be living in the wrong part of the south because they’re no different here.In some cases, they’re WORSE!

No, common courtesy ISN’T a southern thing. It’s just one more thing this baby boomer is being forced to live without.
