Since the week before Christmas we’ve been on the hunt for a good, used treadmill.

We’ve considered new (and haven’t exactly ruled it out), but until we (I) prove that we (I) will make good use out of it, we‘re (I’m) not ready to drop down the required chunk of change.

So, much like every other time we’ve looked for a good deal on someone else’s cast-offs (or wanted to cast-off something of our own), we turned to craigslist.

Scott had great fun scouring the ads, and actually came away in a better mood than when he’d started. The options were vast, and the potential for having a treadmill in due time was encouraging.

However, as I type this, it has been exactly three weeks since we started our search. We are no closer to having a treadmill than when we started and the frustration of it all is burning me up. Not as much as... say... a thrice-weekly treadmill excursion might, but I’ve worked up a sweat, to say the least.

Although I have had some good luck in purchasing (and better luck in giving away/selling) items on craigslist in the past, overall it is an experience I don’t wish upon anyone. When you‘re dealing with other people (and not just on craigslist!), you are subject to their own challenges and whims. And sometimes you just can’t help but laugh (or you’ll have to cry).

Like the response we got last Tuesday, saying that yes, last Sunday (two days prior to the email being sent!) would be perfect to pick up their treadmill, and to please call before we come. Unfortunately, my time machine was in the shop so that just didn’t work for me. Besides, the request to call was not accompanied by a phone number, and I refuse to use my psychic abilities for just anybody.

Or the one that responds, simply, “Yes, you can come get it tonight.” Great! Cool! But, um... where are you?? So we respond immediately to the email, asking where they might be, and the response is to “just enter #4571* at the gate and we’ll be watching for you.” Don’t ask me “what gate“, because to this day I still don’t know. Nor do I even care anymore.

Then there’s the one who didn’t even respond initially, leading me to assume that the item had actually been sold and they were just too lazy to remove their ad, even though that requirement is clearly explained in craigslist’s rules. Then two weeks later they respond to see if we‘re still interested. “Yes! And please! We can come get it right away!” Only to never hear from them again. Well, maybe that’s not fair. It took them two weeks to respond to the first email, and it’s only been six days this time around.

When I mentioned to Scott that perhaps this was a sign that I’m not supposed to exercise at all, he countered with just going to Academy and buying a new one.

Instead, he’s scanning craigslist yet again. I guess I’ll keep you posted!

    • Lori, have you looked to see if there’s a ‘freecycle’ network in your area?

When giving quality stuff away, I’ve had much better luck (fewer flakes, there I said it!) with freecycle.

And, Scott says buying new from Academy trumps driving to Georgia for a freebie. tongue out But thanks you for the offer, lol.

    • LOL Carol! Glad to be of service I guess.

Teeky, I got jokes, but I’m determined to whip this bod into shape before our road trip in May to see my family. I’m lucky that my body typically responds well when I put it to the task, it’s just a matter of doing it!

I actually forgot about kajiji karyno. Thanks for reminding me!

    • Yes, I know what you mean about Craig’s List - it used to be so great, but seems to have fallen into the hands of aliens or something lately... I, too, am looking for a used treadmill (need to exercise; don’t want to battle the elements; can’t afford a new one...sigh).

I will check on the other sites recommended, but am not real hopeful as I live in rural North Carolina...
