It’s no doubt that Meryl Streep is one of our most popular modern actresses. Her range is all-encompassing, and she is a favorite of many co-stars and directors. She truly approaches acting as a craft, and she takes her craft very seriously.

You may have seen her in any number of the 60+ television and film titles to her credit, and you probably feel like you know her very well.

But, did you know:

  • that Mary Louise "Meryl" Streep was born in Summit, New Jersey in 1949?
  • Or that she was initially drawn to (and extremely gifted in) operatic singing? She trained with the same voice coach as renowned vocalist Beverly Sills. Her interest in singing waned, however, when she entered high school and discovered boys and cheerleading.
  • At fourteen she put herself through a transformation and blossomed from the self-proclaimed ugly duckling to a "Seventeen Magazine knockout". She died her hair blond and (with the exception of when a role required differently) she never went back to her natural brunette coloring.
  • After getting bitten with the acting bug in high school, Meryl attended and then graduated from Vassar with a B.A. in drama. She then immediately enrolled in Yale Drama School, where she eventually graduated with an M.F.A.
  • Was once engaged to fellow actor and one time-costar [Link Removed] who died in March of 1978. In September of that same year she married sculptor Don Gummer.  They are still married today and have four children.
  • In 1982 (at age33), a special effects bust was made of her torso. Her measurements were 34-26-36.
  • She only stands 5' 6" tall. Many people believe her to be much taller, probably due to the enormous presence she has on-screen.
  • When she attended Yale Drama School, her classmates consisted of Sigourney Weaver and Christine Estabrook. She also performed at Yale Repertory Theater with Christopher Lloyd.
  • According to Katharine Hepburn’s official biographer, Meryl Streep was Ms. Hepburn’s lease favorite actress. Bette Davis, on the other hand, chose Meryl as “the premier American actress“.
  • She is a favorite of many leading men, including Robert DeNiro.

Her list of critical acclaim is quite extensive.

  • She currently holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations at 14 (11 as Best Actress and 3 as Best Supporting Actress); she won twice.
  • She shares the record for the most Golden Globe awards with Jack Nicholson (they have each won 6 times); and she has been nominated a total of 21 times, second only to Jack Lemmon's 22.
  • She has also won 2 Emmy Awards and has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • She currently has two films in varying stages of production to be released in 2009: Julia & Julia (where she plays Julia Child) and an untitled Nancy Myers project costarring Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.

      “I did not know that!”

    • I was kind of going out on a limb, wondering if anyone would appreciate some little known facts about some of our favorite celebs. The three of y‘all are making me feel better about just running with it.

      Thanks!

    • Chocolatier will chime in on this one since she listed her as her favorite actress.

I think she is brilliant. The Bridges of Madison County is one of my favorite romantic movies. I cried like a baby at the end when she just set in the truck. My eyes are watering thinking about  it.

The devil wears Prada. She played  the ultimate #.^xx%*).

Why has noone ever made a big deal of the length of her marriage. In Hollywood standards that is a miracle. Well, I guess in any standard in today’s time.

I love to learn. Who’s next.... I’ll be waiting!

    • Hey Darla!

Yeah, I know she didn’t get listed a lot on the Q, but she is one of my faves, and she’s just so interesting that I thought she was a good place to test the waters, so to speak.

I would have sworn that she was 5‘8” or 5‘9“, and yes, her marriage is amazing by Hollywood standards.

I’ll probably be doing the Did You Know every Monday, and will try to pull from the answers provided on the Q I asked.

Thanks for reading and chiming in, Darla!

    • She has such a great ear for mimicry, she can do any accent. I love doing accents also and I would love to know what she does to prepare for a role that requires her to have a different dialect.
