For all the ladies following my posts about the first wedding in Galveston this weekend.. I was so afraid to see my hometown destroyed but bravely, made chicken salad, tea, poppy seed cake, magnolia pie and cheese squares for a ladies lunch, as we had make up and hair day for my Aunt and other wedding guests.  I barely got ready myself.  My Aunt Grandmother of the bride was gorgeous.

Galveston was devestated, as we drove over the causeway. The sea air was familiar then the sights, of boats washed onto the hwy, debris, homes destroyed, people living in tents, red cross vans, Salvation army, traffic lights not working and as we made our way, oddly the Convention center was left untouched as was the San Louis Hotel both on the seawall.  The wedding was perfect and beautiful. The bride stunning and the wedding cake and food was wonderful.  I left after we danced and cut the cake, my usual exit time.  The wedding party went to an after hours party at the San Louis Hotel where guests were staying and then disaster struck.. the brother of the bride, my cousins son was approached by two police and a security officer he is only 19 only one year older than my son who fortunately left, with me.  My daughter stayed.  He raised his hands and said what did I do.. and he was tazered, beaten so horribly his head was gashed and kicked more when down. It was a Rodney King.. incident.  The wedding guests were all prominant and baseball player Brandon Backe a groomsmen went to see what happened and was cuffed forced down and beaten, and arrested.  My cousin was beaten for asking what happened to his son, and tazered 2 times and arrested... Many other wedding guests and wedding memebers arrested for only asking what is happeneing, what did I do, or why did you beat him so badly.. why didnt you stop.  The place was raided by over 20 police officers, my daughter made it out, stepping past Brandon, who was face down beaten in the bushes. My nephew is still in custody by Galveston at the hospital in ICU brain injury ward... they plan on taking him to jail as soon as they think he is able.. Galveston has no open hospitals and if he has a problem no one can help.

Ive been taking witness statements all day and this was clearly a case of police brutality..

I think the legal question in this case is .. if you see a police officer or officers commiting excessive force.  What is our right as humans to prevent it if we can.. our instincts are to stop the beating before they kill, and if we inquiry as to why and what happened should we be charged and beaten for interfering with an officer of the law ?  Its a tough question because legally we cant interfere with an officer of the law.. but seeing a teenager beaten to near death, brother of the bride... an nice kid .. what do you do ??

My second question is when a person is in the hospital under arrest, do you think it should be legal to prevent family from having legal medical authority and to prevent the parents and family from visiting or talking to thier son and brother ?  The Galveston Police have been preventing any access to this teen and I heard they are wanting to charge him with five felonies.

What world do we live in.. that this can happen.  Im glad my daughter was able to escape and she saw many tazered for asking what happened and why.  Nice people... too not routy bunch.

    • Why isn’t there a lawyer involved...or several lawyers?  I don’t know about you...but my lawyer’s phone would be ringing off the hook until I got satisfaction....and if that didn’t work...I’d be calling some District Attorney’s or something.  A good legal team is in order here...smells like a civil suit.

    • I agree. And also with what Annie said. It does sound to me as if the police are treating it internally because they know something isn’t right here.

Making it very public will put pressure on the police to come clean and make things right. With your line of work I hope there would be something you can do, without affecting your established rapport of course, to help your nephew.

It would apppear to me that, just as in New Orleans following Katrina, the police are hyper sensitive and overly reactive right now. No excuse but could be brought into the open as a possible reason and avenue for the department to make amends.

    • The police definitely used force that they did not need to use. It is so scary when they have the authority and abuse it and there is nothing anyone can do in the moment. If that was my child laying in the hospital bed I would get my own tazer, go to the hospital & zap anyone who tried to get in my way!!!! I hope the police men involved in the incident are held accountable for their actions.

    • My cousin was the man in the video that was tazered against the wall, he said it was the second time they tazered him and they beat him.. his son was nearly beaten to death.. a woman in the crowd, said stop please, your killing him and was pepper sprayed but said she deliberately fell over his head to prevent the police from killing the boy, my nephew.

Police are covering the story but the wedding was not a routy wedding it was a civil wedding no one was out of line or wild.. it was officiated by a city counsel memember.  Very elegant, Brandon Backe, did nothing but speak up to save the boy from being beaten to death and was beaten himself and arrested. Brandon didnt threaten anyone he was just trying to calm police down saying its cool. He was just being a HUMAN Being, trying to keep a nice 19 year old kid brother of the bride from being murdered.  In my opinion Brandon Backe (baseball player) is a hero, amoung others that dared to point out the injustice, and tried to save a life.  Brandon took a beating, and was arrested for speaking up.  We need more men like him.

    • Greeneyedlady,

I am a little under the weather, but it doesn’t take a lot of thought to recognize that this was a TOTAL misuse of authority.

These men need to go back to the police acedemy and learn what it means to protect, serve, and uphold the law !!!

I do hope these men who were wearing badges that night will be “tried” and found guilty for abusing their rights as law enforcement officals.  It was WRONG,WRONG,WRONG !!!!

I’m glad you and your children are okay !!!

Big Hugs  ( and you need them

    • Well we got the lawyers and Ive worked so hard gathereing evidence to security it all day yesterday.  And still today... The attorney called me this afternoon and told him I dont have my office or my twelve office staff, its just been me and my daughters to get statements and hand write them and take pictures, etc... Ive been displaced by Hurricane IKE from my office, cell phone dying, home phone out of charge and still managed.

He said with out my help, he would not have a case.. Ive secured much so far, more to come.

My baby girl leaves tommorro, she extended her flight back to LA to help her mommy do cases.  Then back to the model acting world for her.

My nephew is in hospital with lack of motor skills and speach skills from beating.

    • Here is the video of my cousin on YOUTUBE being tazered, twice, maced, beaten, cuffed and arrested.  Rewind it and you can see the hand taze hit his chest the shot tazer launch while he is down, and while he is down the mace.  All for asking about his son, who was inside the hotel getting beaten to near death.  Brandon Backe the famous Houston ball player and pitcher.  Was a hero, he spoke up to save my nephew from being beat to death and turned the police from beating the 19 year old and Brandon Backe took a terrible beating, many blows to the head he was cuffed and arrested as were many guests.

My daughter Vivian Leigh Bearden is in the article below and if you go to Galvestondailynews.com you can find more articles.  The picture attached is my nephews blood on the floor where he was beaten and life flighted to herman hospital put in icu on the neuro ward.

    • GreeneyedLady,

I looked at the video and nearly cried. It really brought “light” not just to the words of a deed done, but the actual brutality itself. I am deeply saddened.
