I just attended the Podcast held by Yana and Karin today.  I thank Yana for taking her time and putting this together.  Karin is on the Expert column and how nice to have her as a resource to us.  

This was my first.  I did not know what Podcast meant.  Now I found out it is what I am already used to, namely “Conference Call“.  I dialed the number and once I hit *6, I would be on mute mode.  I was so worried that I did not get muted for I was cooking and putting my dishes away.  Anyhow, the call lasted only 30 mins and the information is so valuable.

Karin told us how to avoid distraction by not facing the door when we are working.  Yep, this mean other can only see your back.  Or if it is not possible, close the blinds or the door.  This way, we don’t get distracted by seeing people passing by and others will have a lesser tendency in distracting us as well.

She said once we were interrputed, no matter it's short or lengthy, it would generally take us at least 20 mins to regroup and refocus.

She also advised us to check our emails on allotted hours only.  Emails are great distraction.  One of her creative suggestion is to put a timer on our work station, whether it is our desk or kitchen counter if we are doing house chores, set it to 15 to 30 mins.  If it buzzes, we should pause and ask ourselves “Am I doing what I am supposed to be doing?”

She said list the task and prioritize them is a must.  Some would do their daily task list either the night before or in the morning.  

When we asked her, which task should we perform first - the simple or the complicated ones.  Her answer was, “If you a morning person, do the complicated in the morning.” However, if you are not the morning type, do the simple first and do the complicated in the afternoon or at the time you feel most energized.  Meaning do the complicated ones when your mind is most alert and sharp.

She also talked about Christmas shopping.  In order to relieve stress and enjoy the Holidays, plan and start now.  List the recipients and their gifts, start shopping (Let’s help with the economy!)  She also said we could save a whole lot by buying now when we are calm.  For otherwise, we would be so stressed with the holiday rush and we would just picked up anything that may be expensive or meaningless.

Again, I thank Yana for doing this.  It is free and yet I got so much ideas out of it.  I can’t wait for the next one.

    • I found my note and discovered I forgot to mention one thing:

      She said when we answered our phone, we should just announce our name and say “How may I help you?” She said that would count a few seconds of mumble jumble and make the caller to get right to the points.  She said that few seconds of mumble jumble could save up to 30 mins or more time usage.
