I work in a hospital.. im a cna (cetified nursing assistant.) and when i started there the nurses asked how come im not a nurse.. ive been in health care for 20 plus years..wanted to raise my kids and live my life for them so school wasnt a issue.. actually i was trying to get them thru before i worried about me! lol anyway the last couple of weeks ive been asked againe.. and more people are asking me.. the fall schedule is to soon for me.. but i asked God today to please let me know. So im waiting. and God knows that im a little deaf so  he will have to hit me in the head pretty hard! lol anyway just felt like expressing myself...my son is18 and my daughter is 16.. so im almost done! grr and im a little intimated about school.. hope i spelled that right.. lol oh well whats your comments... feel free to let me know.. thanks

    • I teach at a local community college where our nursing program is tops.  You would not believe the amount of non-traditional students who are attending nursing school.  Many of these men and women have been out of school for years (we won’t count how many!.  As a teacher, I’ve found that the non-traditional students are, by far, more determined and energetic than many 18 year-olds.

My advice?  GO FOR IT!!!  If it’s what you REALLY want to do, brush off your backpack and sign up for school.  There are many programs for women just like you to help you get over the initial “OMG” feeling.  Go ahead, take the plunge- and you never know what can happen!

    • I took classes at my community college a couple of years ago. I was the oldest one in most of my classes and I became like a den mother. I loved it! The kids were great. And, one thing I noticed was the teachers treated me with a lot of respect. I think they appreciated having an adult in their classes.

I say go for it. I bet you’ll have a great time.

    • Go for it Sassy!  You must have a quality about you that makes people think that you are a nurse already....what a compliment to you.  In my opinion it takes a very, very special type person to do that profession.  God bless you and trust your instincts about what feels right.
