Not sure what category to start in-Being a grandparent-being a parent... Two lovely little girls who have come  into my life-they have always been here-but now legally...

Their parents my son (23) and his wife(20)-the Generation RX of today-the young and so foolish, the handout nation we have become...They do love their children-I know that..they just don’t understand how to love a child...routine, consistency, cleanliness, stability, etc...Not that at their age I was such a terrific parent all the time-but you eventually learn “something“..

I asked them if I could be guardian, to avoid the possibility of the girls going onto foster care....They agreed and it has been a battle ever since I “stole their children from them“..it has only been 6 months, but it has been a long very long six months...

I have had 2 back surgeries, one in March and one august 4th...hence my post for today- anothe day of pain-trying not to go crazy...

    • Sandra, our family is in the exact position as you. My stepdaughter is a single mom, lives in our cottage and has lost guardianship of her child to my husband’s ex wife. She falls into the category of generation Rx as well.  It’s a tough position to be in but thank goodness for you that they have you in their life. I’m sorry that you have back pain. I know it throws a whole new element into the mix.

    • My stepdaughter at first accused her mother of stealing her daughter. I sat her down and had a very stern talking to. I gave her the real picture of how someone had to step in and care for that child since she wasn’t doing it. Then we had the little one over for a full day, including dinner and a bath so she could see how much of a handfull she’d become. Very headstrong little girl! When it was bath time I offered for my stepdaughter to take her to her cottage to bathe her there. She looked at me and quietly said, “no, you can do it over here.” I think that was a pivotal moment for her.

    • Nova-

My heart is there for you..it is such a tough decision to step in -and so life changing too...your heart breaks for the little one, and also for your children..If you think it may happen, prepare.prepare prepare...Each state is different on how they handle these things. some states are very good in helping grandparents become guardians and have alot of resources, others, not so good. I don’t live in a Metropolitan area in Indiana, but if I was in someplace like Indianapolis, there are many of resources. I am learning along the way-would be glad to share the general resources I have and tell you wht I was able to find out that should apply to every state...Good Luck and God Bless...
