We’ve done this hike several times before. But the last one was 3 years and 25 plus pounds ago. Yesterday was humbling to say the least.

We start at Sliding Sands trailhead - appropriately named, trust me. We hike down to the valley floor then ascend a sandy trail up a cinder cone and around to a very rocky trail to Holua Cabin. There are picnic benches and a well maintained outhouse. Believe me, we‘re ready for a pit stop and lunch by this time. Then it’s out a very rocky trail to the even more rocky switchbacks that lead up to the end of the hike. All in all it takes 5 hours on average with a 3,000 ft. elevation change. Yesterday we had perfect weather. Sometimes we‘re met with blazing sun followed by clouds and rain. It’s a challenging hike. The entire trail is made up of sand and rocks. I had a huge blister on my foot from not wearing the right shoes but it felt sooooo good to climb out of that valley and see the parking lot.

My camera was acting up and I only got one photo. Too bad. I wish I could show you more of the trail. It looks like you‘re on the moon inside that dormant volcano.

So, that was my New Year’s Day!
