Do you worry about premature aging?  Does your skin feel dry and wrinkled?  If so, you may not be drinking enough water.  Drinking plenty of water can keep your skin hydrated and healthy, prevent disease, and even promote weight loss.

For some time now experts, including a number of prominent health practitioners, have suggested that people drink plenty of water.  The original suggestion, offered years ago, was that adults drink 64 ounces of fluids each day.  Recently that's been misconstrued to suggest that people drink eight to ten glasses of water each day.  Water does have many benefits over drinking other types of fluids.

How much water you should drink is, in my opinion, subject to debate.  Some of you may have heard of the woman who died not long ago from drinking too much water.  That was a case of extremes.  Generally I suggest that you start with the eight to ten glasses as a guide and increase your water consumption if you're exercising or living in a dry climate as I do in Utah.  I sip water throughout the day and don't bother to keep track but easily consume eight glasses or more.

The human body is about 68% water.  Water not only quenches your thirst, it allows the body to function properly by enabling internal chemical reactions to take place.  Water hydrates the cells and provides the fluid within which all body functions occur.  Drinking water is the most important thing you can do to maintain a healthy body.

A lack of water can cause the body to become acidic, creating an environment susceptible to disease.  Some natural health practitioners suggest that cancer cannot exist in an alkaline environment.  A variety of diseases thrive more readily in a body with an acidic pH.  

Soft drinks and coffee are acidic and though they contain water their affect is to dehydrate the body and lower its pH.  Even some water has a low pH. Many bottled waters and all of those that come from the reverse osmosis process will be acidic.  The sugar in soft drinks also creates a reaction in the body that makes you want to eat, so drinking water is beneficial in that it hydrates the body without the addition of sugar.

The pH of your blood is 7.4.  When drinking water you should look for spring water with a pH of 7.4 or higher.  I am not a proponent of drinking highly alkaline water.  It's my view that the human body developed over the millennia drinking water from lakes and streams and that we should strive to drink water with a balance of minerals.  For more information of that topic you may wish to read my article 'Which Bottled Water Is The Best?'

City water contains a variety of carcinogenic byproducts of chlorine and has been linked to cancer and other developmental effects.  City water may also contain contaminants from local agricultural or industrial activities.  It's not enough to simply start drinking more water.  You want to be sure to treat your water to remove any contaminants.  Most city tap water can be readily treated to make it equal or better quality than bottled water.  Showering in chlorinated water is also drying on the skin and hair and accounts for half of your chlorine consumption in any given day.  Many people mistakenly purchase water softeners when what they really need is to remove the harsh chemicals from their city water.

If you try this approach of drinking filtered water and decrease your use of soft drinks and coffee for ten days to two weeks you will notice a definite difference in the texture and health of your skin.  If you continue with the regimen over a longer period you'll increasingly notice that you can hold the aging process at bay, lose weight, and maintain your health.  Much of the disease and premature aging that takes place today is due to the poisons in our water and our food.
