If I could find the sound of an old vinyl record being scratched by its needle, that would be the sound to insert here...You know the sound, and now, you're probably hearing it over and over in your head.  Imagine that sound and that's what I heard when called to make plans to go on a mission trip to the Philippines in September 2012  (insert scratching needle on vinyl here).

At first, I heard the call for Sierra Leone, Africa, but something called back to that island in the Pacific Ocean.  Doors opened and the opportunity arose from what seemed to be thin-air.  How could I explain this?  I racked my memory bank...At the age of 7, I remember crying in Mama's lap when I awoke for school only to find Daddy had already gone to the airport, headed to Haiti on a 2-week building trip.  Daddy returned and brought a hand-sewn doll with coffee-bean earrings; that doll sits on a shelf in the bedroom to this day.

Five years later, Mama traveled to Saudi Arabia for 2 months in order to teach CPR and First Aid to the men and boys in the capital's hospital.  A few years after that, both of my older brothers traveled to Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico and Honduras on mission trips to build churches, schools and relationships.  I didn't hear the call to go overseas.  I worked with my local church's youth group to paint a house, help with fundraisers and to have devotions with those in nursing homes.  I promoted volunteerism and local missions at home.  I wondered how anyone could look outside the local walls to a country to which many will never travel...I wondered what this "calling" would feel like or if I'd ever feel it.  Would I ever hear that call to go overseas?  I never applied for my passport..until last week.

Now, it's time for prayer that we will be able to raise the necessary funds and to be a blessing.

Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks...
