Building character in children can be one of the most challenging of all experiences; understanding this challenge with a positive bent of mind, can make it easier for parents to ingrain character traits in their children. Building character in children is indeed the cornerstone of optimal parenting.
Parents, who help to build a set of strong character traits in their children, feel validated; they are oft rewarded with a sense of pride and joy in seeing their children blossom into men/women of character. It is primarily your perspective as parents that can make this process easier. Depending on the structure created, children evolve into respectable, responsible and competent human beings- - -men and women of strength and character.
It has been universally acknowledged by experts that parents exert the greatest influence in shaping their children's character and ultimately their lives. The best character training children can receive is by observing their parent's behavior at all times. Most children hold their parents in high esteem and are inclined to follow their examples. Hence it is critical that parents make a conscious effort to be good role models and exhibit the character traits which they want to build in their children.
It is the core values like integrity, respect, self-discipline and responsibility that can develop children's 'inner' being; it is these which can ultimately culminate into building the foundation of good character. It is important for parents to draw their children's attention to these factors, for it is these core values which could make them trusted and respected members of the society in their adult years. Parents who habitually impress upon children the value of good work ethics can instill in them the courage of conviction to withstand any external pressures.
Parents need to stay connected and keep in touch with their children at all times. By spending quality time with their kids, they can ensure that their children develop positive character traits. Parents who pay regular attention to their children's progress at school, who keep a close tab on their interests and social activities and those who insist that their children follow a certain code of conduct, can develop important life skills in their children- - -all necessary ingredients for building character.
Effective communication facilitates the character building process in children. Parents, who initiate conversations and discussions pertaining to issues which are important to children, can effectively inspire children positively. This approach contributes to strengthening children's self-confidence and builds their character. Listening carefully to children and taking their opinions seriously, conveys to them the message that they are loved and cherished- - -even when they fall short of their parent's expectations.
Parents can play a major role in instilling self-discipline in their children by making them responsible for their behaviors and actions. Giving children the freedom to make decision independently and insisting that they bear the consequences of the mistakes made can certainly help to build their children's character. It is these children who tend to develop a mind of their own and do not succumb to outside pressure or influences. It is they who exercise caution in their thoughts and deed, are respectful to all those whom they interact with and demonstrate courtesy and politeness at all times. It is these self-disciplined children who become individuals of character.
Studies clearly indicate that the skeletal framework of building character strengths in children largely depends on the quality of family dynamics, the caregivers and the schools. It is therefore important to practice the above fundamentals of character- building process on an ongoing basis. Children, whose characters have been positively developed, can be assured of better, more fulfilling and happier lives.
Another great article Gabby.
It’s so true: “the skeletal framework of building character strengths in children largely depends on the quality of family dynamics, the caregivers and the schools. ”
It’s back to basic time. Less TV, games and tech gadgets. More of parents one on one time, discipline, love and understanding.
Wonderful post! If only more children came from families who are good role models, teach them the importance of respect, make good choices in life, and to be responsible for their actions... Some behavioral issues of kids come from the lack of attention or abandonment by their familes so they act up or crave attention at school. Parent accountability and good schools are essential in developing positive character traits in children.
Your views on proper upbringing of children are commendable.
What a wonderful world it would be if all parents thought on these lines. Thanks for your feedback.
Sorry for my delayed response. I was out of the country for a while.
