Question:  Lately I have been having nasty swollen pimples around my chin.  Of course, the more I touched them, the more irritated they got.  I have tried the over the counter gel, it does not help.  Do you have any recommendation?

Answer:  As you probably know, acne may be caused by a range of issues including hormonal changes, sensitivities, weather, etc. And some women find that they will develop acne at midlife, leaving them feeling like a teenager all over again.

If you can’t find out or control what is triggering your acne, look for treatments that can exfoliate or unclog pores. There are several choices to consider including salicylic acid, retinol and mandelic/malic acids.

Salicylic acid is an oil soluble ingredient that can penetrate pores and help to remove sebum that is blocking them. You can use products with salicylic acid on a regular basis or just as needed (spot treatment). Consider [Link Removed] or Effaclar AI.

Retinol is a Vitamin A derivative with many skin benefits. Found in over the counter preparations such as [Link Removed] retinol is to retinoic acid. Retinoic acid is used to effectively manage acne. In addition to helping unclog pores, retinol really is an important part of any anti aging skin care regimen. It can be irritating until skin adjusts and skin may worsen (as pores unclog), prior to improving.

The combination of mandelic acid and malic acid (two alpha hydroxy acids) possess antibacterial, oil management and antioxidant actions to help reduce acne breakouts. This combination may be found in [Link Removed] and is an ideal solution for sensitive skin types.
