I am not a patient person. It seems like God is always trying to teach me, so obviously it has not been a lesson well learned for me. I don’t tend to be anxious over things, but I still like to know that I have some minutia of control. -deep breath, and breathe -
On Tuesday, one of our goats got sick. I was away from home, and was directing my daughter on what to do based on the symptoms she was giving me. By the time I got home late that night I realized we needed more expert advice than mine, so I called the vet. I didn’t expect her to make it through the night, but she did. Her symptoms were neurological, and we were treating her for a bacteria called listeria which causes the brain to swell. We did everything we could possibly be do, but we still lost her Wednesday mid day. The vet caused a chill to run through my bones when she mentioned that you must always consider the possibility of rabies when it is neurological. So that afternoon we carried our beloved goat (shipped in all the way from Arizona) to have a necropsy done. She told us we might hear something back on Friday since they act pretty fast when there is human contact. On Friday we heard nothing. So all weekend, I waited, patiently. Today, I called and was told the soonest we’ll hear anything will be tomorrow. HELLO! This is a possible Rabies case!!!! What else can one expect from UGA? I am not a happy camper. The possibility is slim, but I’d still like to know for sure. That is why I am paying them big bucks to find out! UGH! We only have 10 days to start the rounds of horrendous Rabies shots, and here we are closing in on 7! I am going to be one IRRATE momma if this turns out to be a rabies case. I’ll not be happy, just because we’ll all have to endure the shots. I’ll be less happy because I’ll be in a frenzy to get them lined up, and I know what those shots cost unless you shop around. We have friends who are just finishing up their shots, to the tune of 7k per person (shots only). The going rate at your local community hospital is 27k per person! Can you say bankruptcy?
Being so sick over the weekend helped me keep my mind off of it, but now I am wondering how well I’ll sleep tonight. While I am saying a prayer for Cheryl, I’ll be saying some for me too.

    • Thank you! I can begin to think how much upheaval it would cause if it were rabies. It isn’t likely, but possible, and a bit scary!

    • I’m praying too, Dee Dee that this is not the case. One good thought that comes to mind is, if it was a really strong probability of rabies they would have been very quick with calling you. Just the potential liability alone in not calling you could come back to them in spades. Especially with the number of children you have at home.

      I’m saying prayers.

Chinadoll, you always make me laugh. And I did read your post. Thanks for the reminder to let go and let God. Darla would be proud you are standing in the gap for her. estatic
And now, I think I am off to bed.

    • Do you have health insurance?  My IT work was in health insurance... your insurance should cover the shots... also why are people paying for those shots.... most states health department will pay for it.... you should check it out...

and don’t panic.... things will be fine... I’m sure.

I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

    • I don’t know about other states, but Georgia doesn’t. We don’t have insurance, so it would be totally out of pocket. My concern right now is not really the money, it is knowing in time to be able to do something about it in the event it is rabies.
A little update: I called a friend at UGA to find out what to do. Ends up the goat is not on file there, so I called my vet back. When I called the office this morning they told me it would be 4pm today before we’d hear anything - if we hear anything. That was not acceptable to me! I am down to two days and counting. It took me forever to let go last night (or this morning rather) and get to sleep. I can face my fears... I just need to know how to proceed.
So, I just got off the phone with the other diagnostic clinic. The lady who can help me is out, and they took my number. I am taking a deep breath again, and waiting. The rabies test only takes 24 hours - and they received the tissues on Friday. IF we are dealing with rabies I will be SO LIVID that they have been dragging their feet. If the test isn’t complete (as in they put it off until Monday) I will be even more livid. Heads will roll!
Thanks for letting me vent. My adrenaline level is slowly coming down. I’ll post more when I hear back from the lab.
