I have never been much of a touchy-feely or chit-chatty person with strangers, not one of those people who coos at all the babies in their strollers. Being that I live in TN now, I am opening up more and making small talk with people I come in contact with. But today I did something that kind of shocked me.
I had to run the the vet to pick up meds for Hannah. As I walked in, the vet was escorting a woman to the lobby, and the woman was sobbing. The vet turned to go back to the room, and the woman was alone there for a moment, and in my head I was asking myself, “Should I say something? Should I pat her shoulder?” And then I decided to hug her. I walked over to her and said, “you look like you could use a hug.” She had brought in her pet, and apparently it needed some life-saving treatment, and she’s afraid of whet the outcome might be.
I didn’t small-talk with her, or even really converse with her anymore as she sat down to wait for the vet. But as she left, I patted her shoulder and said, “Good Luck.”
And when I got to my car, I had tears in my eyes. I hope the hug helped at least a little.
It IS a good feeling, isn’t it? Vikki is right, it is part of paying it forward. Everyone can use hugs throughout the day; if more participated in hugs, I’m convinced that it might be a more amicable world that we live in. :D

You are a wonderful person, I know you realize what it meant to her. I applaud you for doing such a wonderful thing she may not know you but she will remember you forever.
I’ve always been a hugger. It feels good, but I can understand how it would be uncomfortable for someone not of that personality type, Lu. I’m sure the woman appreciated your gesture of kindness!
You’d never make it in Hawaii, my friend. Hugging is actually expected, even among strangers, even among co workers, and kissing on the cheek is the norm. Even my husband’s employees will hug and kiss me when I come into the room. It’s odd to some but very normal here.
Lu....you might disagree with me..but this is my take. I believe God put you there at that time for that woman. Then..for you to do something out of the norm for you..and you just jumped in there and did it....something made you do it. I am sure you were very comforting to her and in my opinion you did the right thing. It’s a good thing my dear and I’m proud of you. 
Mary, I totally agree because
#1 I have had that chore on my to-do list for weeks, so why today?
#2 we already had the meds we needed at the house, why didn’t I check first.
I felt so much empathy for her, because I’ve had to have 3 cats and one dog put to sleep, and I was a wreck. And I had someone with me those times-this lady was alone.
Lu, That small gesture conveyed more then words to someone in crisis. Bless you for showing how much you cared.
That gesture just shows that you are a very caring and loving person and I’m pretty sure that you made the other person feel good
I have to say, getting to know so many great women on this site, and seeing how much compassion and caring there is, has really opened up a whole new attitude in me.
I haven’t had enough sleep and am way too emotional for that kind of story...
I wish I would have been at the vet- I needed a hug today!
ya know lu, you most likely helped her in a way you will never know.
when i had to put beau down, i held him when he got the shot and for 30 mins after he was gone. I could not stop crying.
As i exited the vets, a young man sitting by the door jumped up and held the door for me. As i passed him he gently touched my hand for a sec. the tears flew, but that small gesture is what got me home....
Lu sometimes all it take to make someone day is a hug,sometimes words is not even need,(just your hug gave her a little bit of hope that she can make it thru the day.You did a great deed.

Do you suppose that woman has any idea how much YOU got out of that hug? Did YOU have any idea how much you’d get out of that simple gesture from your heart?
You saw someone in need of something you possessed...compassion. How generous of you to share with a stranger.

That was a wonderful thing you did. The woman may not have even absorbed it during the moment, but I’m sure she will feel the comfort from your hug when the acute stress and shock has passed.
I wish the best for her pet. I have been through 30 years of life, illness, and death with my animals and I know how horrific it can be. I have had occurrences of uncontrollable sobbing with the deaths of my pets, and I could see fear in the eyes of strangers as I was in the lobby....instead of moving away from me, as they did, it would have meant a lot to me to have a stranger give me a simple hug.

how sweet Lu. I think the door has opened to you for a hugging type life girl. I was never a hugger either, wasn’t raised that way. I’ve always had a lot of compassion for people but did not express it physically, but in the last few years I got around some hugging type friends and it has become a regular thing for me.
