Let me start by saying, I’m signing a lease tomorrow at 11:30 Hawaii time on a commercial space to turn into a chocolate production kitchen and commercial bakery. And I appreciate all of the support and messages I’ve received from my fab40 friends. You guys have been, well, fabulous!

But the title of my blog has more to do with my personality and really how the odds were stacked against me in going forward with this business in the first place. My husband would describe me as more of a thinker than a doer. I’m also more of a cognitive person than a behavioral person; meaning I can mull things over to death, never actually getting anything accomplished. I can talk myself out of success in an instant. I self doubt better than anyone I know. I talk a big game and fizzle when it comes to “game” time.

Since the commercial baker I currently rent from told me she was scaling down and closing her kitchen, I’ve been obsessed. I started searching for commercial space. Then I remembered a building near my home that went through extensive renovation. It’s a beautiful building. I thought of renting there 2 years ago but didn’t have the nerve to pursue it.

I swallowed my fear and called the owner of the building to set up a meeting. I’ve been pestering the building manager every few days to let me into the space so I can have another look. I’ve called county and state agencies over and over until someone would take my call. I walked into the restaurant of one of the other tenants and asked if I could impose on his time. When I found out I needed a certificate of occupancy and was unable to get anyone to answer my questions, I drove down to the new office of the former tenant of “my” space and asked them for advice on how they acquired theirs.

You have to understand, I just don’t do this kind of stuff. I’m friendly, I don’t make waves, I don’t pick up the phone and cold call anyone. I’m a really nice person and don’t usually speak up for what I want. And I especially don’t ask the owner of a commercial building for some free rent while I get my permits in order - but I did! And he agreed! This is huge for my self esteem.

So if you have a moment, please think of me at 11:30 Hawaii time. But I really just want to thank everyone again for all the support and encouragement I’ve received here.

    • Congratulations Cynthia. Thank you so much for sharing that story with us. I can sure relate. Although I am very friendly and can be outspoken. I can also be very shy. I am more of a thinker than a doer. This success story is such an encouragement for me and I am sure other's as well. I am great in school because that takes thinking. For me that is the fun part, but when it comes to entering the world and doing the more practical stuff I sometimes fall by the wayside. I am attending school now to get a second degree but when I finish and have to go out and try to sell myself I will think of this story and it will give my strength. Also when I try to do something more with my artwork it will help me build confidence. You do not know how this helps me and others. I know it will be a sweet success, just like you and your chocolate, Faye   happy
