I am a bossy britches. A know-it-all. Sometimes, a real pain-in-the-ass (ask my husband about game nights.) But when it comes to the area where I have the right to be the boss, the right to say exactly what’s on my mind, I become demure and assume rather than asking questions-or better yet, stating what my expectations are. I’m talking about situations where I am the consumer. Specifically, with what’s happening with the creation of my new site.

I met with Tim from the web design group on February 13, and we discussed what I needed to do. We discussed price, what would be done for that price, the extra cost of professional photography, and a promise from me to email when I would be ready for that shoot. I was told the time frame for completion could be about two weeks. Tim had me speak with Wes, the actual web designer, and Wes asked if I could email him some of my own shots until the pro pics were taken. Assumption on my part- that my pics would be used to create the web templates and be replaced with the pro shots.

I emailed Tim within a day and told him I'd be ready to shoot by Feb. 27. He set up an appointment for 1pm that day to meet with the photographer. Assumption on my part- that I would be there when they shot the pictures. Nope. I dropped them off for the photographer with verbal instructions on how I needed things to be set up. Pics were shot over the weekend, at which point I realized I had forgotten to take some items to them. So we arranged for the other items to be shot on March 1st. Assumption on my part- that the other photos were being edited for publication.

After that, I waited for info. Made a few calls. Sent a few emails. Early last week, I was told I would have a mock-up to approve on Friday the 13. On Thursday the 12, I contacted them to ask for a time, and was told they would be ready to meet Monday (two days ago.) Assumption on my part- the photos were ready to go.

Met with Wes Monday to approve the mock-up. Layout is wonderful, but some of the color schemes I was not happy with. But instead of stating exactly what I wanted, I tiptoed and asked for his opinion. So the hammering out of the template took a lot longer than I thought. Luckily, one of the other guys made suggestions that were more in line with my way of thinking, and I became more comfortable stating my vision. Assumption on my part- we would be looking over edited photos together. Nope. they needed to be edited still, and would be put on a disc for me to pick up Tuesday (yesterday.)

Here’s the doesn’t-it-figure part-the DVD drive on the computer was completely messed up, and I had to online chat with HP. that ate up a few hours.

Finally get the DVD drive working, look at the pics and-whaaaaaaa????? THESE are my items? No, I am not happy. Mark says maybe it’s our monitor, so I email a few friends. Nope, they agree, pics are not good.

Earlier tonight, I shot an email to Tim and Wes stating that we should have sat down with a better plan, that I am not happy with the pics, and that we need to get these reshot ASAP as I am already behind when I planned on launching. Got a response-we reshoot tomorrow at 10am.

As per usual, I feel like they are thinking, “What a bitch!” I feel like since I didn’t come in with a definite plan and let someone else control my destiny, that I have no right now to stand up and be the boss.

    • Lou, I heard your frustration.  Techie speaks foreign language and their vision, even after our explanation, are totally off key majority of the time.

(I do give credit to Victori for he is reasonable and easy to communicate).

Other technies, they usually said “You don’t understand.  We can’t go that.”  And we said “You don’t understand.  I need it done and I don’t care if you can or cannot.  Just get it done.”  Then they usually go back to their work place, think and rethink, and the next day, they would come out with the solutions.  Strange... why can’t they say “it can be done or modified in the first place” or “if they don’t understand our visions, why can’t they clarify rather than wasting their time, efforts and sometimes cost us more money, by replacing their visions over ours“... you got me going.. sorry and good luck.  Be firm, be specific and ask them to repeat and explain what they understand.

    • Cindy,

Your paying for it so you have the right to say if you don’t like it.

You are not being a bitch. The web site is going to be the key to draw business. You have to feel good about it and proud of it.

I wish you the best of luck with the shoot this morning. Let us know how it goes.

    • Cindy,

You have the right to EXPECT and GET what you BELIEVE you are paying for. If none of those factors apply then give them the boot!!! If they portray themselves to be professionals and take your money, they can only expect to get the wrath for not giving the product promised.

Hold your own girl and let us know what happens!

    • I’ve never understood why when women (especially in business) speak up......the word “bitch” always comes to mind.  Yet, when it’s a man speaking/standing up he’s considered as “someone who know’s what they want, great leadership, etc.“.......

I wouldn’t say your being a bitch at all.  It’s your site and you are paying for it.  Your are entitled.  Don’t worry about what they might be thinking.  If the shoe were on the other foot and you were providing a service to these guys and they weren’t happy well you know that they would certainly let you know!happy

    • UPDATE-All is well. I was there for a new shoot today, and watched all the editing. It was different photographer, also. When Wes, the designer, called the first photog last night to ask for a reshoot, the guy said, "I can't do any better. The packaging was kicking my ass"(meaning the reflection from the cellophane.) Well, thanks for telling someone you did subpar work, jackass!

So, I am breathing a lot better now!
