Health insurance is very costly.  Whether an individual has it through their employer or not, it can cost an arm-and-leg. Decent health insurance for a family of three can start at $400 a month, if all are healthy.  If single, over 44, and in good health the cost can be $250 a month. Health insurance should be available for all American citizens, rich, poor, and middleclass; regardless of ethnicity. The high cost of health care has made it a luxury for those that can afford to pay the price. Those that cannot afford healthcare die needlessly, remain sick, and go without treatment.

Most people try to stay healthy financially and physically, but the worry and anxiety of going without healthcare for many causes sickness and disease. Whether you have a job, no job, or have very little money.  There are a few options that you should be aware of to obtain health insurance.  In order to be able to make the monthly payment, you may have to make adjustments in your budget and spending or get a part-time job. Below are some options to make an informed decision regarding health insurance.

Discount Cards
There are a lot of companies who offer inexpensive health insurance discount card.  The discount cards allow you to pay a small monthly membership fee, and when you go to the doctor or hospital the services are discounted.  The downside with these plans, if you had a major medical problem the small discount wouldn't really help you.

Group Insurance
Many people forget about this option to getting lower-cost health insurance.  Join a group or an association for cheaper insurance.  The organization will not contribute towards the payment of the insurance, but the payments should be less expensive because of the group discount.

State Health Insurance Pool
This insurance is for high risk individuals that have been turned down by other health insurance companies.  Usually individuals are turned down because of pre-existing conditions.  This isn't the cheapest option, but will pay for pre-existing conditions if COBRA is not an option.

Medicaid Insurance
Medicaid will pay health care expenses for low-income families and individuals. Each state sets the eligibility requirements so qualifying for the program is state specific. If you are working and still don’t have enough to buy affordable health insurance, see if you qualify.  Also, most states have health insurance for children so research the requirements for your state.  See if you qualify.

Medicare Insurance
If you are sixty-five years old or older you qualify for Medicare. You may possibly qualify if you are getting Social Security disability benefits. Medicare is provided by the government and is administered by the Social Security Administration.

Bottom line, when researching health insurance for you or your family; do the following:

• Determine how much you can afford
• Decide the type of insurance fits your needs
• Check the services covered – what can you do without
• Look for out-of-pocket cost
• Research monthly cost, deductibles, and co-pays

Do you believe healthcare insurance is too expensive?

    • Yes, I do for a good plan. In Massachusetts it is mandatory you have health insurance either through your employer on your own or through the state if you qualify for it. If you can prove a hardship that you cannot afford any health insurance then you may be able to get a waiver otherwise you are penalized on your state taxes.
