She called on April Fool’s Day,but this was no joke. “I don’t feel well, something’s not right.” I told her I would be right there. My niece and nephew,8 y.o and 6 y.o. were visiting for spring break. Immediately after her alarm company calls-“The front door alarm has been set off-I explained it was ok I was on my way there. “My nephew probably set it off.” She wants to know my name(????),I’m listed as the first contact to call if burgler alarm goes off. We argue back and forth for a few seconds and I tell her if my mom is worse off because of this dumb debate, I will call supervisor. She then has to check my phone number(?????)to make sure it’s me. I explain “I have to go-goodbye” and hang up on her.

Get to my mom’s house and niece lets me in, “Grandma is in bedroom-I saw her crawl to the bathroom and her eye looks funny.” “OK, you and nephew get dressed and have a bowl of cereal in case I have to take you with me.” My mom is sitting on edge of bed but is too weak to stand. “Mom, look at me(her left eye is looking outward, right eye looking at me), smile, squeeze my hands, you’ll be OK“. She grabs me around the neck and shouts“I’m not ready to go yet.” I’m practically lying on top of her and tell her I won’t let her go,but need to call 911 to help us.

911,what is your emergency? Even as a nurse this sounded so comforting. I explained what was happening and she told me emergency crews were on the way. Then, when I told my mom this she wanted to change her pajamas, “It’s not everyday I have men in my bedroom.” My father has been gone 18 years this Oct., and except for a brief marriage she hasn’t had any men in her bedroom.

I will continue the story in next blog-arthritis in hands.
