Mirror, mirror on the wall, why is my body beginning to fall?

Once a woman turns 40, her metabolism takes a big plunge. Fortunately, her ego doesn’t have to go along for the ride.

The holidays are fast approaching, and for many of us, this is the time those unwanted pounds begin to creep up and park themselves around our waistlines, thighs and derrières.

As we get older, it can be easy to give up and simply accept the unwanted poundage as unavoidable and inevitable. However, there is an alternative.

To enjoy your holidays without packing on the excess weight, follow these simple tips:

The Liquid Fix

1)   Think twice about high-calorie frozen drinks like Mocha Frappucinos (a medium-size portion without whipped cream contains nearly 260 calories and four grams of fat!) and opt for a healthier choice.

2)    If you want a smoothie, skip the local smoothie places where the average drink is over 350 calories and make one yourself. One cup of fruit juice or skim milk with frozen fruit provides just as much satisfaction for half the calories.    

3)    Alcohol can also add extra weight during the holidays. Wine coolers, margaritas, and mixed drinks contain sugar and empty calories. “Alcohol pops” such as Mike’s Hard Lemonade easily contain 240 calories or more.  A glass of wine may be a better choice.  

Whatever you choose, remember that it is part of your daily caloric intake.

Choose Your Dips Wisely

Have you ever heard someone complain about eating raw vegetables yet still gaining weight? If not, then you haven’t met me.    

Every holiday season I would go to a party and stick to the raw vegetables. And every holiday season I would end up putting on weight. What I failed to pay attention to was the calories associated with the dips.  

Holiday rule #1:  All dips are not created equal!

Some contain a lot more fat and calories than others.  

Creamy dips are usually the most fattening. For example, Ranch contains up to 120 calories and 12 grams of fat per two tablespoons. Wow! Fabulously40 women don’t need 12 grams of fat of anything, especially on a celery stick or a carrot.  

To add flavor to your veggies, think hummus or bean dip. Or better yet, stick to salsa.
And as for chips, make one trip to the buffet table, get only one serving of chips, and stop there.    

 Make Good Dinner Choices

1)Start with a salad or a vegetable soup.
2)Eat slowly; enjoy your meal and your company.
3)Don’t overdo it on the bread!
4)Skip dessert, or at least share it with someone.

Shake Your Booty

Increasing your daily aerobic activity will keep the weight steady and your scale happy.  

According to the "A Report of the Surgeon General,"  the health benefits of exercise and physical activity include:  

Reduce the risk of premature death
Reduce the risk of developing and/or dying from heart disease
Reduce high blood pressure or the risk of developing high blood pressure
Reduce high cholesterol or the risk of developing high cholesterol
Reduce the risk of developing colon cancer and breast cancer
Reduce the risk of developing diabetes
Reduce or maintain body weight or body fat
Build and maintain healthy muscles, bones, and joints
Reduce depression and anxiety
Improve psychological well being
Enhance work, recreation, and sport performance  

If you don’t exercise regularly, itís time to get started!  

If you walk for  30 minutes each day and use common sense, this could be the first January where you donít have to go on a diet to loose the unwanted weight gained during the holidays.  

Wouldn’t that be a fabulous way to start the New Year?

      Im so glad you wrote this as I do exactly that at dinner, it gives you variety a taste of everything so you dont over eat one thing.  I dont touch the bread and its rare I share a dessert.  It works perfectly.  Now to work on shaking my booty more.

       Make Good Dinner Choices

      3)Don't overdo it on the bread! (NO BREAD for me)
      4)Skip dessert, or at least share it with someone

    • And don’t forget to make nutritional cleansing a part of your life. It give your metabolism the kick it needs, you’ll have more energy, sleep better and it helps keep you from craving unhealthy foods (at least the one I use does), and have general better health. Be sure to look for one that is an ALL organ vital cleanse and WILL NOT starve your body. Thanks for the tips Yana!

      These are great tips. Here are a few more from the resident health nut:

      Stay away from artificial sweeteners. They are detrimental to your metabolism and are neurotoxins that settle in your brain, and fat cells.

      Stay away from high sodium foods and things that contain MSG or nitrates. All of these will cause weight gain and bloating.  

      When you serve your plate, remember that your stomach is only the size of your fist. Anything more than that is more than you need to satiate your hunger. You do NOT need to eat until you are full. Eat small meals and often to keep your blood sugar level which is necessary for your body to burn fat.

      Drink enough water. Sometimes we mistake thirst for hunger which is one of the reasons we never feel satisfied.

      If you are craving something sweet, go brush your teeth. I know that sound silly, but it works! You will lose the ‘taste’ for something sweet.  

      Lastly, if you are wanting to greet the new year a few pounds lighter, consider including Osolean in your daily routine.       Thanks for the great tips. I’m 46 and I have definitely noticed changes in my body. I’ve also added doing simple exercises like squats (20-30) while I’m brushing my teeth.  

      when I wake up in the bed I do 30 bicycles and 20 crunches and I often time get out of the bed and do the plank move and about 20 pushups. At least I have done something if I don’t get to work out or dance salsa!

      this is such a great topic and you have all brought up a lot of good ideas. something that i find as helpful is to tap (EFT) before being in a situation that could be problematic.

      for example, let’s say that you are going to go to a party, and you tend to eat more than you feel you should (after the fact).

      so, first thing is you come up with your set-up phrases. even though:
      .....i feel that i deserve to eat as much as i want when i go to parties, i deeply and completely love and accept myself
      .....i tend to eat too much and then feel bad about myself...
      .....i end up feeling guilty about all that i eat...
      .....i choose to have some of the foods and not pig out...

      you could tap before you go to the event. if you overdo it, you can tap afterwards.
