Some days, the endless round of watching what (and when! and how much!) I eat makes me crazy. Add to that my stressful job of making writing sound like the most exciting thing on the planet to a bunch of people under the age of 25 for four gorgeous summer hours twice a week, and the book I'm trying to finish the days I don't teach, hot flashes thatgrab on and don't let go just as my husband walks in the house, flips off the AC, and says "It's suchacool night."

Little things, really, considering the woes of the world these days. So here's my short list of little remedies for life'sminor irritations:

1. Read a good book, and then blog about it. I love giving good writers free publicity. It feels good.

2. Let someone else polish my fingernails for a change. Color on my short writerly nails cheers me up, but what's even better is letting somebody else do it. Yesterday I needed the deluxepackage so indulged in a pedicure, too. I never do this. I always do my own pumicing and polishing. So it was a treat!

3. Connect with friends. Let work go, and make a lunch date. Or go for a walk with a friend. Or plan a special weekend getaway. My friends and I love to go to Stratford, Ontario (two hours away) and take in a play or two and some shopping.

4. Let someone else cook dinner. Restaurants are best because then there are no dishes, but pizza and paper plates work, too.

Any other suggestions? I could really use some this week...
