Love it

It used to be that the older the woman, the longer her hair.

What happened?

I remember when my mom turned 40 and chopped off her hair.  Now twenty years later she still maintains a short haircut. I grew up believing that as we women get older, our hair should be shorter.

Apparently that attitude prevailed for a long time and was dictated by our society.

Jane Seymour doesn't agree. She has always had beautiful signature hair, and even now in her late fifties her hair is as beautiful as ever.

If you are looking for a drastic change, you can chop off your hair and have a cute, sassy look like in this video, as for me- I am growing mine out.

What are you doing with your hair?

    • When I was a kid, my mom kept my hair in a pixie because she didn’t want to have to deal with it. I always thought it looked horrible, and I HATED people asking me if I was a boy.

When I got into junior high, I let it grow. It was a stringy mess, becuase I hadn’t learned how to really do anything with it. At age 13, a friend showed me how to use a blowdryer and curling iron, and she shaped my brows. Awewome!

At 14, I discovered the PERM, and kept it in various stages of curly-ness for the most part over the next 20 yrs. I let it grow extremely long during my third pregnancy, at age 30, because it was so shiny and healthy and grew so quickly then.

But by the time I was 35, perms absolutely did not work on me anymore, so I had to adapt to straight hair. (Good thing it was in style again! LOL) I’ve kept it bra strap length and straight for the last 7-8 years. My hubby loves it long, and begs me not to get too much cut off every time I got to the salon. My friends love the long, red locks, and I draw a lot of compliments. I do feel long hair often  draws down the features, but I get some angling/layering around the face to lighten this up.

I think some older women have it cut off because they think they are supposed to, but they end up looking more masculine than feminine, such as my MIL and mother. My MIL has a spiked kind of mullet thing which is awful on her,  and my mom has a short layered look that lays flat and doesn't work with her full, round face. I really think the key to any hairstyle which becomes more and more important as we age is to have a cut that works well with your face shape and hair type/texture.

Believe me, I get jealous of women who can shower, shake, and GO (especially when coming out of the pool or on the road, etc.)... I do have to spend time brushing, drying, flat ironing, pinning, braiding, deep-conditioning, or whatever. Sometimes I pull it back into a ponytail just because I’m sick of dealing with it. But most of the time, it’s worth the extra work. At least for now.

I don’t think I’ll ever have it really short. It does not work with my face. But I may go shoulder length at some point just for ease of care.

    • I currently have very long hair, half way down my back.  When I was younger, mainly in my 20’s, I wore my hair short.  When I divorced my first husband (at 31), I decided to let my hair grow long. I’m 41 now and it’s been long most of that time (I think I cut it shoulder length once or twice during that time).  However, I’m thinking about cutting it again.  Not really sure.  I use to wear bangs, but I let those grow.  I really hate having hair hang on my face.  My mom use to tell me...“you need bangs, you need bangs“.  Then once they grew out, she said ‘your hair looks nice‘.  Hahahahaha!

In the mid-1990s I went through an Isabella Rossellini phase with short hair. It looked OK at the time (and drying after washing was shorter, too), but I remember the pictures and now I think I looked like a soccer mom.

P.S. Would it be better if I had my real photo as my avatar instead of this Roundhedz graphic? Thanks.

As for light or dark, I have been both and I prefer blonde for me. It makes me look younger. estatic

so i guess im letting it grow back out some, i dont want it as long, im not wearing it gray(personal thing) and it is hard to take care of.

    • Good question, well I love longer hair it makes me feel younger and its really easy to take care of.  I dont believe age has any baring on your hair - look at Goldie Hawn, Cheryl Tiegs, Christy Brinkley, Jennifer Aniston, so many others look great over 40 w/long hair.  I had my hair cut shorter then I ever had it- NOT BY CHOICE-told the stylist to keep it at shoulder length but he did what he felt is best. I was soooo very upset and he knew it. Many friends do not like it, they said its not my style at all- one said its not the whimsical Teri she knows and I need to grow it back. So its a matter of how you personally feel - after all its only your own opinion that matters most since you are the one looking in the mirror...

(I wanted to add an image to show the new do but dont       know   how?

    • I agree with many of your comments that hair length should really be dictated by the shape of your face.  For example, someone with a long face might not suit a longer doo, and someone with a round race wouldn’t suit a short bob.  Myself?  I’m 42 and have bonde hair that falls just below my shoulders.  It’s naturally curly, so I often wear it curly, but use a flattening iron to straighten it as well...

    • Carina,

Your hair looks great. I am with you, I was blessed with very fine hair that I have given up on trying to thicken. I just go short and it is working for me. I also agree it is about how it looks on your face and if you have a FAB hair stylist. Since I do not have a husband, when I do get one, then he will accept me as I am short hair and all.

      Cheers.

    • I had long hair until a few months ago. Due to surgeries and all that goes with them, my hair was not healthy. So, I cut off all the damaged length plus a small bit of healthy hair just to be sure and am starting over. My hair is happy, healthy, and beautiful. Too many people have told me that I should not color my hair at all. Its a natural silver/white and should stay that way. At 46, I’m not too unhappy about it. I was born blonde. Light hair is normal for me.
