Mom. Mother. Mum. Mathair. Maman. Mueter.Mama, Maman, Marmee. Is there any word in any language so dear?  Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world in over 40 countries!  The exact date and the way it is celebrated differs of course, but the intent is still the same; to honor Mom, w.ether it be your biological Mother or someone special in your life who has been like a Mom to you. Here are a few of the countries who celebrate Mother’s Day a bit differently than we do in the U.S.A.

In the United Kingdom, you will hear of ‘Mothering Sunday‘, During the time when many children were sent off to learn a trade, they came home during the religious season of Lent to honor their Mum with flowers and small gifts.

Yugoslavia has an unusual way of celebrating Mother’s Day. It is observed in December, and the children sneak into their Mati’s room and tie her up bed. When she awakes she must promise to give the children small gifts she has hidden from them if they will untie her. Yikkes!

In Sweden small, plastic flowers are sold and the proceeds are used to take Morsa’s with many children on a much needed vacation! Wonder if they provide a sitter as well?

Spain sees the children coming to Madre’s home the night before for Mass the next morning and a huge dinner to honor her.

No matter which country is celebrating, I’m sure they all have Mom-isms. Those pithy little sayings we all hear growing up that still ring in our ears! You know the ones. Eat your vegetables. Don’t shame your Mother on the Sabbath. Stop running like a heathen. Here are a few of the more popular Mom-isms that have guided me through the treacherous pathways of life:

1.If I talked to my mother the way you‘re talking to me...

2.If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.

3.Someday, when you have kids of your own, you will understand.

4. I’ve told you a thousand times not to do that!

5.Close that door, were you born in a barn?

6.When I was your age...

7.Don’t embarrass your Mother with your behavior!

8.Your leaving the house wearing THAT?

9.If I have to speak to you about this one more time...

10.Are you TRYING to make me angry?

11.If you‘re going to kill each other, do it outside!

12.Wait till your Father gets home!

13.What? You think money grows on trees?

14.Bored? I’ll show you bored, go get the mop and a bucket.

15. Because I said so!

Remember any special mom-isms you would like to share? Oh, and for the Mom in your life, Happy Mother’s Day!
