Money for Nothin'
A few days ago my gym membership expired. The cost to renew? $239.00 for two years. That's not bad--about ten bucks a month. EXCEPT:
(a) I have noticed that a lot of the little stuff is being ignored. They have not had paper towels, and they have been on "back order" for several weeks. The light bulbs are not replaced when they burn out. Machines break and are not repaired for a month. These little things add up. And when you factor in the fact that two of this chain's branches have closed...well, I'm not sure rejoining makes a lot of sense.
(b) We are on a budget, and $239 is $239. I wouldn't feel so bad if I just paid monthly, but in one big chunk like that....especially if the place is going bust.
So, in pondering this dilemma, I have come up with what I believe is a reasonable solution.
I own at least half a dozen exercise DVDs as well as a number of hand weights. The wonderful neighborhood where I am lucky enough to own a home has sidewalks for miles and miles. I own two very cute little clip-on iPod shuffles filled with really fun music. I have one of those big huge exercise balls AND a yoga mat. In short, I can have my OWN gym! For free!
The plan is that I'll do one exercise tape every day that the weather is cold and/or crappy, and walk on nice days. I'll do free weights every other day, and on alternate days I'll clip on one of my iPods, dance around the house and sing at the top of my lungs. ("Cherokee-ee pee-ple! Cherokee-ee tri-ibe! So proud you lived! So proud you died! And then that little whiney thing that annoys the dog.)

I'll give it two weeks. If it doesn't work, I'll pony up the cash and re-join the gym.

And the next day it will close.

    • With that amount, I think you can buy a Wii and exercise from there.

Sounds like a good plan of what you are doing.

    • I’m using the park near me as its a 4 minute walk - very beautiful and its free plus a full circuit is exactly 5k - so every other morning I’m walk/run/walk run and timing myself ......

    • I go to our community park everyday. They have paved and non-paved trails. If I do both trails, it’s a 4 mile walk. I normally do them both once and the paved one twice.
I put on my ipod and just go. It’s the most amazing feeling ever. I love it.

    • I used to do the walk at lunch and sometimes after work if my schedule allowed, but with the weather so nasty and cold out, that’s been tabled and I haven’t yet found a likable substitute...humph!  i guess if i’m going to encourage someone, i guess i have to get off my own duff too huh?  okay maybe i’ve been using the universal weight machine as a clothes rack for too long...kirby, keep me informed on how your own quest for home fitness works out, and maybe we can keep each other encouraged.
