I drove out to my usual weekly cleaning job this afternoon.  The sun was shining and the wind was blowing and it was a beautiful afternoon to be out and about.

And then I got in the Ranger to come home and I got to here:

And this is what happened:

And I wasn’t surprised because I’ve been driving on borrowed time all summer.  Those tires are as bald as Cojack’s head. You can’t even tell what the tread pattern used to be.

So I loosened the lug nuts and went to find the jack.  Uh oh!  All I had was a little jack that looked like one of my kids got it in a box of Cracker Jack!   It was raising the pickup, but I figured, either it was going to slip and I’d end up with a broken arm, or it’d slip and I’d end up with the axle in the dirt.  Either way, not the way I want to finish the afternoon.

So, the woman who can and will change a flat tire in six minutes or less had to call (gasp, choke, wheeze, flinch) a Man!  Ugh!

I called a man who used to look like this:

And after a sufficiently long wait, he showed up with a grown up jack and I got my tire changed.

As I sit here typing this, the air is rapidly leaking out of the spare and I’ll have to call the garage Monday and order tires and every dime I made today x2 will be gone.  :(  Such is life.

    • Vikki, It wasn’t a bad day at all.  It was a gorgeous afternoon and it got my husband out of the house.

The guy that used to look like the picture?  Well, he lived hard in his youth, and in his middle age he married me, ended up with major back problems, and now he’s a fat crippled up old man.

Butterfly, I’m not sure if it was quick thinking.  Changing a tire is almost a reflex action for me.  Hubby was feeling bad because he is “useless” and I told him not to feel bad because I’ve had bald tires all my life and I’ve probably changed WAY more flat tires than he has.  I don’t know that that made him feel any better, but it’s always been a fact of my life.

    • Nita, sounds like we‘re in about the same boat. My husband says he doesn’t complain, and he doesn’t verbally, but all you have to do is take one look at his face and that says it all.  He’s always grumpy and snarling.  But every once in awhile I catch a little tiny glimmer of that wonderful HOT guy he used to be.

    • Thank God you can change a tire. I can change a tire to had to learn when it was just my three kids and me for eight years and I could not afford road side service. I have road side service now thank God because it sounds like my husband is like yours he was a fireman paramedic and he hurt his back at work and then had five heart attacks so he can not do anything anymore. It gets very hard sometimes because I have my special needs son also. I have to remember every day that God does not put on you more than you can handle. I love that the thing you really expressed is how beautiful the day was. Because I might have not handled it like that lol. But you never know God might have saved your life by this little inconvenience you never know what might have happened up the road. For me I have to remember to thank God in whatever situation I find myself in. So I really love your outlook on it.
