So, this is one of those ‘it could happen’ blogs.

As some of you know, for me to shower is a huge chore. Someone has to be home to help me in and out of the shower. Now mind you there is only about a 3 inch step over, but to me it’s a foot high. And the glass shower doors make it hard to maneuver into my shower chair. So, someone has to lift up my leg to get it over the 3 inch rise. And getting out... we will not even go there as that is a comical scene!! lol

Well, when we went to Carlsbad my dad set the hubz and I up in a hotel with a handicapped room. The shower are was the bomb!! The bathroom was basically one big shower. The floor sloped a bit so water ran into the shower area. There was a built in chair that was high enough for me to get on and off by myself. OMG, I was in hog heaven.

So, I have designed my lil shower area for me.

Right now the area contains the potty and the walk in shower stall. I can purchase a shower/tub for handicapped persons, but then Rog would not get the nice stand up showering he likes. And the one I like is in the 6000 dollar range. But, if you want the best, get the best!

So, my alternate idea...

We will gut the area, paint with moisture wear paint, then tile the whole area with a slight slope to the drain already there. During the tiling we will add handicapped bars which will enable me easy access to get up and down. We will also be adding a teak built in fold up and down chair for me.

Now, right now we are broke thanks to having to fix the broken AC. But, I am going to talk to a contractor I met at Lowe’s and get some pricing. The gutting and painting part we can do ourselves to save some money, but the rest we will need some help. Rog could do it, but he really does quite enough around here.

This is really exciting for me even though it is still a ‘it could happen’ idea. Aw hell, it’s a ‘it will happen’ idea.

It will be so cool to be able to take a shower all by myself and have one thing I am able to do alone!! You have no idea!! tongue out

So, any who, here is my design idea...what do you think?

So I say go for it... make sure the flooring tho is as non slip as possible.
And since you may get easily tired after you shower make sure you have a heated towel rack so you can wrap up in a warm towel while you catch your breath.

    • In Sweden every where has those showers - all the kerbs are slopped and have grab rails its the best in Stockholm they are very aware like this

I love the idea and I think you could do this yourself with some work - do you not get grants for you house from the Government ?
In the Uk you would have this done free by the local council .....

We cannot even get a loan as housing prices to low, and the ratio is 80%.

We do not do credit cards, so, it will be a bit. But we will get it done! xx

    • MsT......maybe you could find a volunteer group who would help out with cost and labor.  I know after IKE hit, the neighbor across the street had a church group show up and help clean up their mess.  I watched and told my husband “man, we need to join a church!“.  Good luck.happy

Wish I lived a lot closer to you.  I’d be there in a sec to do the tile work for you.  I’m no good at plumbing, but I’m a pretty good tile setter.

    • It sounds fab! We have just built a house for my Mum on a wee plot of land opposite our house. She is finding bathing more difficult so we have installed a shower with a teeny step but no door (she didn’t like idea of wet room)but plumber came up with a brilliant idea. We are putting in a floor to ceiling pole in middle by the bath and just opposite exit to shower so she can grab it for support etc. Lots of jokes now about my 80 year old pole dancing mother!
Of course, everyone is different and need different things. As Vicki says, in UK you would get an occupational therapist to visit and assess what was best for you. There are O.T’s in social services and the NHS (which for what it’s worth is a WONDERFUL system, although inevitable flawed. But no one would ever be left without adequate washing facilities if their needs merited it, although waiting times do vary. I speak as someone who worked in both social services and NHS with disability issues.
Good luck to you! Your indomitable spirit will see you through! What a star!

    • Tracy,
First you need to be very clear on what you want! (You are)
Second you need to set the intention that it will happen. (Your did)
Third you need to ‘KNOW’ it will happen. (It will)
Visualize it each night before you go to sleep.
The law of attraction is very powerful. Expect Miracles!!!

PS What colors do you want to use? Will you have a theme, like the ocean or??? Give us a really clear picture of your dream bathroom with exquisite details. estatic The universe is listening!

      The price, not so much.

But, hubby has a couple guys that do set construction for movies etc and hare contractors that are coming over to look and said ‘knock wood’ they can easily do it on our price range!!

So the story continues. It will get done, but I wanted it done like yesterday! lol

      TY for asking msj! heart

Hope your guys can make the dream a reality honey
