So I thought, "Great, another social networking site and gulp another blog?  What could I EVER cover in another blog?

Well, my birthday is coming up this Thursday (10/2).  I will be 47.  My father was 47 when he passed away in 1979, of heart disease and a stroke.  He hated his job, but he did it because: a) he was good at it, and b) it put food on the table.  hmmm  This is a strikingly similar situation in which I find myself currently.

I am a patient aide in a residential / teaching facility for adults with MR/DD (mental retardation and developmental disabilities).  The work is extremely demanding and utterly draining most days.  Actually, working with these “individuals” (the currently accepted “pc” term on the facility) is great ... and it is one of the top-paying non-professional jobs in the county.  If it weren’t for some of the other staff and most of the administration, it would be the best job around.

One thing you’ll get to know about me is a tend to stray from the subject.  I would say, “I should be more concise,” but I promised a Tai Chi instructor back in the 90’s that I wouldn’t “should” on myself (get it)?

I have been visiting another website called Maya’s Mom, which I enjoyed beyond measure.  I joined on January 13, 2007.  They close for good later on today (September 30, 2008), having been bought out by Baby Center.

So thoughts of my father, and this new “loss” about to happen (and the fact that one of the staff sent me a “Maya’s Mom” notebook as a memento have had me for some time thinking about my “bucket list” ... yes from the movie starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson.

I’ve been debating with myself about the difference between a Bucket List and a “regular” list of goals.  Any opinions you might care to share on that topic would be greatly appreciated.

The one thing that I can truly say is on my Bucket List is:

1. I will visit Scotland.

Why this lack of hesitation?  For as long as I can remember (and we‘re talking 20 years or more, when I have trouble remembering the previous day sometimes now) I have wanted to visit Scotland.  It’s more than a’s a spiritual journey for me.  It’s the one extended leave of absence I could take without my family.  (Sidetrack-when my children and DH went to visit his mother in Texas recently, I had to stay behind to work.  I was not happy.  So I got a tattoo on my right shoulder:  a band of thorns and 3 hearts, each with one of my children’s initials and their birthstone colors.)

In the days, weeks and months ahead, I’m sure this list will grow.
