I love taking last minute short trips, especially when the trip is up north where I can visit my daughter and spend some quality time with her.
This trip was a bit different. My baby started a real job. So what did that mean for us? She could only see us at night for dinner because the responsible adult that she has grown to be will not take time off work because of deadlines and responsibilities. As I was trying to talk her into taking a day off, she looked me straight in the eyes and said: “Mom, you taught me that first you work for your reputation, and then your reputation will work for you.” I guess my baby was listening after all.
Our friends from back east joined us on this trip so yesterday we drove to Napa Valley. The day was sunny and warm, everyone was happy and cheerful, but I, however, wasn’t looking forward to this trip simply because I couldn’t drink. Thinking that I will be bored while everyone samples wines and ports slowly getting tipsy and leaving me behind, I was apprehensive to say the least. I was wrong. As we visited one winery after next, I had a blast. It was a different experience, listening to the tour guides explain the process while being sober has lots of advantages.

With my friend Regina, dinning at San Francisco restaurant “Boulevard“, was a really fatting experience, my diet went right out of the window, but it was worth every bite.
If you are planning to visit Napa, make sure to make reservations at the restaurant RED, I couldn’t believe the combination of sauces that were served with all kinds of dishes. Every dish was better than the one before.
It looks like you had a great time! And Yeah for you AND your daughter on her following your lead!
Yana, I love this post. As you may remember, I quit drinking almost 4 years ago. I LOVE Napa and I loved tasting the wines. I’ve lived quite happily without the drinking, but stopped short at the thought of visiting a winery. Your post proves that so much of what we get out of life is the attitude we put into it. There is so much beauty in the wine country, in learning about the process and the fantastic food and friendship. I’m now wanting to plan that bike riding trip in Tuscany I’ve always wanted to go on. You are an inspiration.

Oh my friend, what a beautiful daughter and she looks just like you. I really enjoyed your pictures, I am impressed. Have a close bond with our children is an awesome experiance and to watcht them enter the world and become full blown adults is sometimes hard to let go. Very nice, thank you for sharing.

ginger, it’s impossible to miss; all you have to do is drive up Hwy 37 and you may get whiplash going from side to side of the street.

Sounds like it was a great trip! Your daughter is gorgeous and looks like you. I love Napa as well, you can never see all the wineries so everytime you go it’s a whole new adventure. Love San Fran. Will have to try your suggestions. We usually eat at Scomas when we‘re in San Fran. Your pictures were so beautiful and it looks like you had a lot of fun even though you couldn’t drink!

Sometimes we think they‘re ignoring everything we say, but could it be that they actually listen?

Awesome. I was lucky enough to spend some of my childhood in Glen Ellen and Sonoma after being born in San Fran. Remember Napa well. It is truly gorgeous. It’s gonna be my 50th birthday to myself to return and spend a week chasing the good wines and making more California memories!
Great story Yana, Out of the mouths of babes’ !!! You do take a step back when your children say something to you that you’ve told them a thousand times. Wow the wax does come out and they can hear you!
I’ve been to Napa a couple of times and the winery are so beautiful. The last time I was there it was at the end of harvesting and we saw how they started the process of making wine. Mind you it was the first of many winery we did that day so I was sober enough to remember it.
I’m glad that you and your beautiful daughter had a good visit. Cherish these times they don’t come as often as we wish. Now that their all grown up and we actually want to be with them they have their own lives to live.
