I’ve just delivered the handmade lampshades to the funeral home. Why do I feel like my work wasn’t good enough? Am I just too picky? Probably. I wonder if anyone else who handmakes product feels like their product just doesn’t measure up to “China” machine made. Funny that China is now the standard of quality. Everything we see in the stores comes from some foreign country. Are Americans not talented or is it that it costs too much for us to handmake product?

Feeling dissatisfied today and wondering if I should get out of the business. Tomorrow I’ll feel different....maybe.

    • Cindy, I think handmade products are the best! I seek them out when I buy anything, for myself or for someone else. I Hope this feeling subsides and your creativity isn’t stifled. In this world right now so many people are pre occupied with the economy and are afraid to spend money and, when they do spend, they may be hypercritical of the goods and services they‘re paying for. I hope you‘re feeling better about your work soon.

    • To be honest, I always look for stuff that is MIA - Made In America rather than MIC (made in China).

    • Thank you for your comments.  I guess I feel this way because the customer didn’t say whether or not they liked the shades, just thank you.  I had also ordered some “made in China” shades for them that I couldn’t get frames for in the US unless I ordered 24.  He commented about those and said “nice!“; but mine he said nothing.  I feel I did what he wanted. I thought I made them well but now I’m not sure.  Maybe it’s just me today.  Insecurity?  I think there are others who handmake things for sale that might feel the same way.  It’s like we are putting ourselves out there for criticism or praise instead of the work.  It’s hard to separate the two sometimes.

    • How about giving your customers a follow up call?  That way, you can obtain feedback, be open for any kind of criticism, yet enhance future consumption and referrals.  Just give this a thought.
