Street fashion in Paris is fantastic and full of surprises.  Last Saturday afternoon I was sitting having coffee with a girlfriend at a sidewalk café in my neighborhood. I had just said to her that if we got lucky she'd have a chance to see one of the local fashion eccentrics, when out of nowhere, there she was – the hat lady of the 7th arrondissement. This week's creation featured enormous mounds of yellow and black tulle wound artfully around the brim of huge yellow straw hat and topped off with a gigantic sunflower.  Conversation hushed as the entire population of the café collectively caught its breath and watched with awe the nonchalance with which this skinny forty-something fashionista sauntered down the sidewalk as only the French can do.  The main show-stopper was her grand chapeau, but it was clear she'd spent a lot of time creating the full ensemble, which included black leggings topped with a yellow silk tunic and belted with a trailing silk chiffon scarf, black patent spiked heels, an enormous black patent handbag, black rimmed sunglasses and – the pièce de résistance – a skinny cigarillo dangling from her fingertips. Off she ambled, God knows where, on a sunny Paris afternoon.  I've decided I'm going to spend more Saturday afternoons at this table on the corner. You just never know what’s in store.  And next time I'll bring a camera.
