Passover is just about here for those of us who celebrate.  

Honestly, due to my health, I gave up helping my mom and sister do the 3 day prep and clean-up for this event years ago.  That’s why if hubby and I are going on an anniversary getaway, we do it during Passover.  Easier.

This year though, we have our son’s wedding so we‘re conserving our funds for all that this happy celebration entails.

Our daughter and grandson Dylan are coming out to see us right at the taile end (which is also Easter Sunday).  

Dylan is not really old enough to sit through the Sedar (I’m not so good at it either, 3 hours plays havoc on me in so many ways), so we‘re going to serve some of the favorite dishes and let him play hide and seek with the matzoh and call it “Sarah and Dylan are here, come see them + Happy 29th Anniversary to the Nadels + Mock Sedar“.  

This alone will have 12 people.  

I will be buying some rotisserie chicken from Costco.  My mom makes the greatest matzoh stuffing.  She adds wild rice and lots of spring veggies.  I’ll probably make a non-dairy noodle kugel (pudding).  I’ll make some charoset.  It’s mainly chopped apples, nuts, cinnamon and some honey and wine.  My sister will make the tzimmes.  Tzimmes is (at least our family’s version) slow-baked carrots, sweet potatoes, onions, prunes and lots of other dried fruits that we mix with orange juice, cinnamon and honey.

You can see why we don’t have meals like this often-a bit heavy on the sweets and carbs.  We ban the bread, but still, I only survive this by leaving the country.

I’ll serve salad instead of matzo ball soup.  No one ever eats the soup (I want to save room for the other foods, is what I hear) and it takes a long time to make the broth and lots of hand power to roll the matzo balls.

For dessert-since it’s our anniversary, my mom’s ordering a macaroon tart.  I’d be fine with some of those to-die-for macaroon cookies our fabulous Jewish bakery makes, but mom’s insisting.

The next two weeks let’s talk about family favorite Passover and Easter dishes.

I’ll give out my non-dairy noodle kugel recipe on Friday’s edition, but what are your favorite holiday dishes?

    • I love noodle kugel!  I also love that there are so many yummy variations.  

      I went to “Blintzapalooza” at our local temple last Sunday.  Do it every year and buy frozen blintzes to take home.   Have been taking my son since he was born.

      Someone asked him if he’d ever had blintzes before and he said “Oh yes, I have them every year.”  They thought that was funny....we‘re not Jewish so I guess they didn’t expect us to be so dedicated to the event!

    • Thank you so much for writing about Passover! My friend who is also my roommate is Jewish and has no family here so I would like to do a little something. The only thing I can make (from the box) is Matzo Ball Soup which I LOVE, lol and latkes (from the box as well) Will check back in to see what else is posted by everyone happyheart

    • as w/ most “Jewish” cooks, we don’t actually have stone written recipes-but we pass down from generation to generation.

      I’ve adapted the kugel recipe from my mom’s-mine is healthier, but the tofu might take some getting used to!

      as for the matzo ball mix-it works very well!  Latkes are so easy and much better from scratch-like mini hashbrowns.

      believe me there are countless variations of those as well!

    • I love kugel. The sweet is good but I think my favorite was the one without the cinnamon and raisins. It was more savory. What is the relish with the beets and horseradish called? I loved putting that on matzos.

      I was married to a Jewish family for 12 years. I really enjoyed the Sedars. I loved all the family traditions.

    • Our home Seder isn’t long. This year will be my husband and I so we will keep it short but our congregational Seder is every minute of 3 hours not including the set up and tear down.  

      I love the kugel and the charoses - lots of wine and cinnamon in mine.  My son love choco dipped matzos after the book Matzos Mouse he got one year after finding the offekomen.  (too late and I can’t remember how to spell it, sorry). Plus roasted lamb is amazing.

    • I enjoy roasted lamb as well, but when we did it at my mom’s she’d always serve roast chicken.  

      Cynthia-the beet/horseradish is just red horseradish for those who like it hot!

      Our charosets did have a lot of wine in it for years-but due to most of the family having meds that require us to stay away from alcohol we usually add some lite cranberry juice instead (we also have several people w/ diabetes)

      funny how life makes you have adjustments to everything!
