Everyone knows that you can’t eat ice cream in the winter. Everyone that has a Jewish mother that is.  The reason is simple - if you eat cold food you will get a sore throat.  Didn’t you know that?

And so, ever since I was a little girl, every fall we would bid farewell to ice cream and popsicles, and welcome the Krembo season. Krembo (krem = cream, bo = inside), the winter ice cream replacement, is a treat consisting of a cookie topped with cream similar to the marshmallow fluff (the kind you can buy in jars), covered by a very thin layer of chocolate. You can get Krembos with mocha filling and I hear they make other flavors too, but the original and by far most popular Krembo flavor is vanilla.

Like Oreo cookies, a Krembo can be eaten in several ways.  My favorite is holding the top with one hand, separating the cookie from underneath (this is VERY tricky!), and eating the cookie first.

These days you can get ice cream in Israel during the winter too, and truth be told, I like ice cream much better. But every year, as fall approaches and Krembos show up in the stores, I treat myself to a Krembo, and for a few minutes I’m a kid again.

    • I’ll take a case!! My goodness, but that looks/sounds delicious!

And I’m really glad my mother never pushed that no ice cream in winter business. It might have affected our relationship, lol.

    • Heather - I actually bought a case (24 pieces) for the girls today.

When I was a kid you just couldn’t get ice cream anywhere during the winter. Can you believe it?

Teeky - not even for medicinal purpose happy?

    • Irit,

I can sooo relate. How about not being allowed to sit on the cold pavement?

Everyone knows if you sit on the cold pavement, your ovaries will catch a cold and you will never be able to have children.

      INSANITY...

Having said that, my grandma assured my mom, my mom assured me, I preached it to my girls, and now the whole San Diego county is aware that I’m a complete nut.

Here is the funny thing....I over heard my daughter few weeks ago lecturing her friend as she was sitting on the sidewalk warning her that she will not have children if she continues to do this...

The power of a Jewish Mother and her persuasion...

    • Yana,
I am laughing so hard.  I never heard of such things, but it definitely made me laugh.  My mother told us things that as an adult I now realize were ridiculous, but like the rest of you have past down those ridiculous senarios to my own children.  LOL

    • Actually the ice cream stores in Utah
      open almost twenty four hours
If you think of it, there are many people here
do not smoke, party, nor drink, including Pepsi and Cola
Where else can they hang out
other than an ice cream parlor!

      A Krembo in Utah
      will be a great seller!

    • Well, I've been doing [Link Removed] on this Krembo (since I can't EAT one!) and am surprised to discover that the US version is the Mallomar (which uses a graham cracker base), which is very similar to the Moon Pie. Since Mallomars melt easily in the summer, they are typically only produced for winter distribution by Nabisco.

Somehow, though, that Krembo looks much yummier than its American counterparts!

    • Heather, THANK YOU!!!! I was just thinking about what I have done to poor desi~lu, and how I’ll have to live with her break down on my conscience for ever and ever!!!

Desi~lu, did you hear that??? Mellomars are practically the same as Krembos! There is a good chance they taste even better!  How are you doing?  Any better?

    • Annie - I never knew you could get them in the US!  And I missed them for the 12 years I lived in the State...

Yana - I think they complement the diet to cope with stress that Annie posted yesterday extremely well!  Plus they are mostly air anyway.

    • Moon pies don’t entice me much.  Guess I’ll just go have a sugar free mocha, probably less sugar and calories for sure.

And I’m with Feathermaye, the Krembo looks much more scrumptious.  Guess I should be thankful I can’t get a hold of them.

    • Susie - happy, maybe it’s only a Israeli thing...

BTW, do Mallomars tend to have stale cookies at the bottom toward the end of winter...

Annie - The unfortunate truth is that at this moment it is raining inside our house... Hopefully our landlord will fix the leak in our roof tomorrow.
